Default The shrimp boat Model 28-2

Went down to the docks to buy 10Lbs of fresh shrimp
for this weekend.
Owner was behind the counter talking with a worker
and was holding a Smith 65.
I commented on the gun and he advised "well it is better shape
than the old one" and he produced the pictured Smith.

I asked what he was going to do with the 28 and he stated he
paid $250 for the model 65...so....that amount would buy the HP.
Sold.

It is rough...will make it a project gun.
Bore, lock-up, timing all great
Any suggestions ?

Soak in some automatic transmission fluid for a day or so and then give a good scrubbing with bronze wool. Stay away from steel wool.
See what it looks like then

The stocks have to be worth $50 to $75, maybe more if they aren't too rough looking (can't tell a lot from the picture). The finish on the revolver may look a lot better after some judicious cleaning, maybe give it a good waxing. In any event, the finish was never meant to be gorgeous. If it shoots fine you did great.

Another rescue story in the works!

I love this site, I'll be watching what happens to this Highway Patrolman!

Good score in my opinion, I would have bought it too.

Xfuzz, I just noticed you're in Galveston, I'm in Clear Lake a little north of you.

Last time I went to buy fresh shrimp off the boats all I got was a lighter wallet.

Lucky day for you, way to go!

Cool gun. Cool story.

Please, please...
Do a clean up as per post #2 and post the resultant pics!
I'd love to see the change. I bet it turns out surprisingly well!

Thanks,
Jim

Nothing beats an affordable project gun that you can't hurt. You can only improve it. Since a nice 28 is worth quite a bit more than your rough one, I'd have it sprayed with a good bake on finish. Maybe even a stainless look.

If I got that 28 for 250 I could justify a little work on it. I would take it apart and bead blast the frame, side plate, cylinder and extractor rod and lightly sand the pieces with 600 grit wet dry sand paper to the desired finish and have a local gunsmith hot blue it. I would polish the trigger and hammer and have them color case hardened again. Maybe 450 tided up in gun at this point. As for the grips, put them in a coffee can and cover with acetone and let them soak for 3-4 days and every so often scrub with a tooth brush. Let them dry out for a day or so then light sand with 600 grit paper and either Tung oil or Tru-oil finish them.

Sorry I could not just clean it up and let it go.

^^^As I was reading your initial post, I was thinking just this.^^^

In years gone by, I always regarded the Model 28/Highway Patrolman as a project waiting to be worked on, but in recent years the selling price on them has gone wild. My opinion now is that you've gotten a rare opportunity here and if it were mine I would shoot it as is (after the cleanup described above) until and unless I found some really great project to use it on. It's original now and can only be original once, so I would think and plan and study on it until that perfect project came up... or you could sell it to me and that's what I would do with it!

Suggestions...well, here’s what I did with a cosmetically challenged but mechanically sound Model 28-2, purchased on a local forum.

I had it round butted and bead blast blued. Went from a beater with surface rust to pimp.

I would either clean it up, leave it as it is, and treasure its history, or hard chrome the sucker for an all-weather woods gun.

But I'm old and have no class.

You could remove and flip the stocks, add a set of goodyears and use the 28 as a truck gun.

No, not bead blasting or cerakoting. Soak in Kroil for a week, brush with a bronze brush or bronze wool from time to time....little Flitz...take your time. At the end apply RIG grease generously and just wait. It kind of heals itself. One of my 28s was similar, totally worthless looking, rusted but otherwise unfired, no rust in the barrel or internals. Now one of my favorites:

$250? HALE YEAH! In a New York Minute!

Soak it, hit it with some oil and bronze wool. Some cold blue or a rust blue and it's good to go!

Also, please point me to the guy selling M65s for that same price!

For $250 you can't go wrong with a Model 28 that has a good bore and is mechanically sound. I agree, remove the stocks and dunk that revolver in Kroil or automatic transmission fluid. Let is soak so that the corrosion is saturated with oil and the moisture displaced. After that, bronze wool or pure copper Chore Boy pot scrubber and oil, gently rub to remove crusty stuff, then clean thoroughly and see how it looks. It might be ok, or you might want a gunsmith to bead blast it and hot blue it. If you want to sink some real money into it, have it bead blasted and hard chromed.

Xfuss,

I'd give you double what you paid for it with no problem.
PM if you'd like to double your money. Cant find any in my area
less than 800. (East Tenn) A lot of guys post that they find them
for less than 500, but where? I'd take any for 500 but no takers here

It was not quite as bad but had red rust pitting on one side where it was laying probably on a garage shelf for years. Dust settled and retained moisture on the surface. The funny thing is that the rust pits were raised up and looked terrible but disappeared as described. After my refinish procedure, the bluing was thinner and and transparent in those areas and the rust pit were visible as little darker spots but flat. I kept this gun greased with RIG for a period of weeks/months and to my total surprise the dark spots started disappearing. Don't know why and how but I like it...

I’d get her reblued or nickeled. She’s had a rough life. I’d call her Cinderella because she looks like she was worked hard.

I was thinking the same thing here , about an offer to double the money , honestly this one would be a wonderful project gun . Doesn't appear to have any deep pitting .

Now that's funny.

I'm the oddball here. I'd sell it to noro and double my money or might not have even bought it.

I like OE stuff. Not refinished, re-chambered, cut or altered barrels or even aftermarket grips.

The only gun I have that I think was altered other than some trigger work is my 6" 686 no-dash and I believe my brother replaced the rear site with a Millet rear site. It was definitely one of his shooters. For a while I thought it might have come from S&W with the Millet site according to someone here in the forum but when I found an empty Millet site box and this is the only gun with one I figured that's where the one on my 686 came from.

Other than that they are all 100% original as far as I know.

I know....... how boring. LOL

I have other guns that have been altered - like my Schofield and my Hamilton Bowen .45 conversion. I'm not keeping either one so I don't consider them as part of my collection. Weird isn't it??

I'll bet he's taken his share of shrimp with that one. You should ask him what's the best load for shrimp.
