Looking for 'smith - lanyard install
Hi all,
I recently picked up a finish worn 28-2. I plan on using this as a woods carry piece.
I would like to have a lanyard loop installed and am asking for a reputable 'smith that can do the work. I would prefer the install to be similar to a M1917 or Victory Model over a "thread and screw eyelet" job.
I appreciate any help!
Semper Fi,
Mike

I like the rings, too. Problem for me is that if the gun wasn't built with one the serial is in the middle of the butt so the ring must be offset and to me it looks ugly this way. There are ways to correct this but at Bowen's hourly rate I don't think I need a ring that badly. It would be cheaper to buy a gun with a ring than to add one.

Is adding a ring to either an aftermarket wood or rubber hogue grip out of the question?

The 2" 500s that come in the emergency kit with orange hogue grips have a lanyard ring screw that replaces the regular hogue grip screw. I called S&W and they sent me two free of charge. I have a 4" 500 and a 329 PD that I added the rings to.

Hogue sells them, but you have to call. $3.50 each, IIRC. They fit the rubbers, but not the woods. Which is probably fine for any gun that you think you need a lanyard on.

It's not unusual for the factory to add lanyard rings to its new guns after the butt was already stamped with serial number. They just drill thru the number and restamp the number on the grip frame under the left grip. I have added an S&W lanyard ring to an N frame in just that way. It's not difficult to do once you have the ring in hand to get measurements from. You only need to drill two holes: one for the ring stud and one for the cross pin to retain the ring. They are readily available for $15 to $20 depending on the source of S&W parts that you use.
For the correct factory location, here's a quote from Lee in another thread: "I have NEVER seen a swivel hole on a K or N frame that was located anywhere but the standard place, which is ALWAYS app 1/10 inch forward of center. If you measure them by hand, don't be fooled by slight differences in how much corner rounding there is- it is always app 1/10 inch forward."

I re-tapped the nut on my wood hogue grips, works just fine with a Bowen loop.

Here's couple I've added to Hogue's. I am pretty sure these came directly from S&W but it's been a while back.
I do like the look of the bigger loop and the lanyard without the clip!

WFR,
Yes, that is the Smith factory ring.
What did you mean by "...and the lanyard without the clip!" ?

Very cool, that's an easy enough solution. You've got me thinking about doing something similar now with a Smith oblong style lanyard loop which I prefer to the round ring. The stud's a little too short and fat to rethread but I could drill and tap it and install a threaded stud of the right size for the Hogue grips. Thanks!

Thanks,

I forgot to mention that Smith has a round ring, (Smith # 043370000; Brownell's # 940-000-062 and the retaining pin is Smith #216430000; Brownell's #800-741-0015), available for it's J frames that has the same size stud as their oblong large frame lanyard loop.
It's a little smaller diameter than the Bowen ring.

For purely esthetic reasons - I love the look of a 4" .45acp revolver with the old style (oval) lanyard loop. I have a 4" model 22-4 that I wanted to have a factory mid-grip lanyard installed on - so I contacted S&W. They gave me a resounding NO - won't do it!
Interestingly - their 5-1/2" model 22 DOES have a mid-grip lanyard - so I'm assuming they stamp the SN differently from the get-go. FWIW - no gunsmith I have contacted is willing to restamp the gun for an installation of the loop - which I guess is understandable nowadays.
Oh well - looks like I'll have to buy one with the longer barrel and rebarrel it with the 4" tube. I hope I have better luck there. (When I asked S&W if they would put a 4" Mountan Gun barrel on my 5" 625 - they also said no. This time, it was d/t their not having any stainless Mountain Gun barrels in .45 acp. Oh well, again.)

You have to get BATFE permission to move the frame ser# before doing it last I knew. There is(was?) a form and process for doing so.
Bowen used to do it and go through the proper steps, but when the BATFE started to reject the requests he stopped adv & doing the work.
Doing it for a purely custom or cosmetic reasons will most likely get a rejection.
I got one rejected when I wanted to move a ser# to less prominant location on an engraving job for a customer.
That's why Bowen won't do the custom frame lightening cuts on the sides of the Ruger SAA's as he does on the Colt SAA frames.
The Ruger ser# is there on the right hand side in the way.
That's the process anyway,,but lots of people don't bother with it!
The original manufacturer can change the number location for a factory option I believe w/o difficulty still, but even that may be in doubt.
I don't really know where they stand on that now.

Isn't the serial number stamped on the frame behind the crane enough to satisfy the BATFE? My 28-2 has the serial number in 2 places.
