Default HELP - Thinning the herd

I have two 4-inch blue Model 28s. One is a no-dash with a kind of beat up finish but the action is smooth as warm butter. The other is a dash-2 that is at least 95%. Due to some upcomming commitments I need to get rid of one of these (plus a couple of more). I would like some opinions of which is the more desirable to keep. I don't have any safe queens so the one I keep will see both range and holster time. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If I can offer a suggestion, you may want to do an Advanced Search on Gunbroker.com on Completed auctions to get an idea of what revolvers in similar condition to yours may be worth. I would do this for everything you are thinking about selling.

Then write down all the guns you are thinking about selling with your estimated value you derrived from above.

Look down the list and decide what they are worth to you. Then decide if each is worth selling based on what you can get for them.

A "beater" of any model, even a Model 28, isn't going to be worth much. You may decide that you can't get enough to justify selling either one.

Keep, carry, and shoot the no-dash. Sell the -2. Bill

Since they're both shooters, the obvious question is: which one shoots better for you? That's the one I'd keep regardless of other factors.

I continue to be amazed at the differences I encounter between theoretically identical guns. I have a 4" 27-3 and a 4" 28-2. They're both outfitted with Pachmayr Gripper grips, both of them see a lot of range time. The only difference between the two guns aside from the higher gloss finish and the cross-hatched top strap of the 27 as compared to the matte finish and plain top strap of my 28, is that the 28 has a plain black ramp front sight whereas the 27 has a red ramp sight. The triggers are about the same on the two guns, well, maybe the trigger on the 28 is slightly lighter than the one on the 27, but not by much.

Ok, the guns aside from cosmetic factors are nearly the same. And yet, I shoot my 28 FAR better than I shoot the 27. There is simply no comparison between the two. The 27 is a good gun, quite accurate. At 10 yards a 1 1/2" group off hand is quite common for me. By comparison, the 28 will consistently put everything through a hole about the size of a quarter at 10 yards. I can occasionally get six overlapping holes at that distance with the 28, I've never done that well with the 27. At 25 yards, the differences are even more pronounced. I got my best 25 yard group ever, shooting any handgun, with my 28. The 27 is pretty good at 25 yards, but it simply doesn't hold a candle to my 28.

Ok, one of these guns is going down the road, pretty soon. I need to thin my herd and I have no need for two N-frame .357s. I haven't hesitated for a second thinking about which of these will be sold, it will be the 27 for sure.

Talking

Seeing they are both shooters and guns that sees a holster wear keep the one that shoots the best and sell the other one. If you have to compromise because you need the more cash then sell the one that brings you the most cash and live with the other one.

If I were looking--the shooter with all the wear is obviously going for less.
Me--I would buy the shooter and get a Smith to do some magic and reblue it for me. What do I care about looks when I can bring it back to life? It aint goona be pretty when I pass from this life---after me gone--what am I to care, I have had my fun with it.
Blessings

That's your answer.

You can always find another -2. You'll get more money for the one with the best finish, IMHO, so let the -2 go. Might as well carry the one with the worst finish anyways.

Thanks for the replies. However, I think I will take the road less traveled. I am keeping both of them. I look at that no-dash and it has so much character that I just can't get rid of it. I bought the dash-2 from my best friend (at a brother-in-law price, if you know what I mean) and although he really didn't want it any more, it still means something to me that it was one of his guns. So, I will get rid of a Model 686-5 and a like-new Model 13.

You are a wise man. So are the others who suggested to keep the one that shoots better for YOU.

Regards,

Dyson

Keeping N-frames always seems like a good idea to me. (smile)
