S&W 28-2 highway patrolman Nickel
I hope that these pictures come out. I bought this S&W 28-2 Nickel not knowing that it could be a rare gun. So if there is anyone out there that can tell me more about it and about what the value is on it. The SS# N194084 I hope the pic can show under the yoke shows the SS# and MOD 28-2. On the 4inch barrel it says 357 CTG and highway patrolman. On the frame under the grip it has a N inside a circle and a J in a box on one side and 8X413 stamped on the opposite side of the grip. Thanks Jeremy I hope the pictures work

I see you learned how to post pictures. It has been refinished. The trigger, hammer and rear sight are nickeled which Smith did not do. Should make a good shooter.

Providing the gun is in otherwise good shape, $350 is a good price for it. It's a very sturdy shooter for .38Sp, and .357Mag ammo.
Factory nickel Model 28's are very rare, but many were refinished at the factory or by other gunsmiths.

Good catch by Muley Gil,
For 350 bucks and a mainspring installed that will
be a dream to shoot and looks nice.
As stated since the trigger and hammer are also
no longer case colored it is a re-finish.
But don't let that be a disappointment as you still
have a fine shooting S&W at a good price. Lots of
refinished HP's out there and i think they look good
in nickel or stainless.

Ya bet it would. I was in the middle of cleaning it and just took the pics for the post but the original ones that wouldn't load even had ones with the grip. Ok factory refinished would make since cause there is a N stamped inside the grip and its so perfect I was really sceptical. Thanks for the help and its going to make a good reliable shooter

I have a harder time telling the length of the barrel on an N frame in pics...4"? Looks nice, refinished or not, at 350, I think you did all right.

It measures 4 at the cylinder. Yes I believe it is refinished. I'm new to the whole HP thing and was just randomly watching a YouTube video on them and saw that all but 50 were blued and mine looked so perfect that it looked original so I got super excited but the SS#'s don't match the 50. I wish the other pictures would have uploaded instead of these mid cleaning pictures without grip or spring because its one beautiful $350 gun that I'm going to pass down to my son because guns aren't made like this when he starts collecting

Oh but it does have a different wooden grip but a high end aftermarket one of some sort. Might throw a Hogue on it so I don't ruin this nice one. Only cause I reload with a 650XL and im able to shoot almost ever day so when I give it to my son after 50K rounds he doesn't have to say "thanks dad for the worn out gun"

One thing about rubber stocks that bears mentioning, especially since you plan on doing alot of shooting with this gun .. they can, and will trap metallic debris and assorted grit and hold it directly on the finish. Under recoil, this debris can cut into the finish. When you remove the stocks you may see the "footprint" of the stocks carved into the nickle finish. If you do use rubber stocks, pull them off from time to time and clean beneath them to prevent this from happening.

All known 25 bright nickel 28 were made for the Florida Highway Patrol and were all 5" guns. Later they made 54 all in brushed nickel 4". Yours is not in the right serial number range.
I've never known Smith&Wesson to do a nickel re-finish on a 28, but it's possible if the gun had some serious surface issues that needed to be covered. Also they would not stamp the N after re-finish, most if not all the original nickel ones mentioned didn't have the N stamp.
Nice shooter though.

Well, from what I can tell looking at the pics it is not a bad nickel job. If so, you came out OK. The rear sight would bother me I'm sure, but it could be stripped - or just replaced with an HP rear sight that hasn't been modified. They are out there and show up from time to time. (Don't have serrations or checkering like the other N-frame rear sights.) Not a bad looking gun. I have seen much worse.
