Looking for help IDing grandpa's .22 revolver
Hello everybody,
I'm having some trouble identifying my grandpa's .22 revolver. We think he bought it in 1968, but we do not have any documentation for it. The number on the frame behind where the cylinder swings out is 471XX and the number on the butt is 292XX. There does not seem to be a model number stamped anywhere.
Any ideas?

Pre-Model 34
Looks like a pre-Model 34 22/32 Kit Gun, with Factory J-frame targets. Nice example.

1953 .22/32 Kit Gun
Welcome to SWF.
The stocks indicate to me that it's a 1953 .22/32 Kit Gun. That's an I-frame (small frame) and could be referred to as a pre-model 34. The target stocks are of a later vintage and not original to the gun.
SCSW-3 says it was originally shipped from the factory between 1955 and 1957 (model numbers were assigned beginning in 1957).
Someone with more expertise in S&W small frames will come along and fill in the blanks for you.

Thanks for the info skeezix! I had no idea it was so old, we thought he bought it new. (First post and I'm already clogging the wrong forum...)
Any idea what it may be worth? My dad thinks he may have the original grips packed up somewhere.

Looked at GB auction BID in the last 90 days.
Almost every bid was OVER $500.
IF he can find the original DIAMOND grips and/or original box they would add additional value value.

Thanks Bekeart. The original grips are on the way. I'm looking forward to seeing how it looks with them on. No plans to sell, it will just be nice to have it all back together.
