Thumbs up Model 36 w/Square Butt

I am new to this forum and I was wondering about my S&W Cheifs Special, model 36. It is older, nickeled and has a square butt. Are these rare? I think most of the guns in this model have a round butt. I also bought a S&W 617 in 6 inch a couple of months ago. It is a '99 model (pre-lock) and it has a round butt. Any info on either gun would be appreciated.

Guess I'm the first one to see this ... so welcome to the forum. You've come to the right place for information. A lot of the guys / ladies here have a lot of knowledge that they are happy to share. I think the first thing one of them will say is that serial numbers and photos would be a huge help in id'ing your guns and make it easier to find info on them.
At just a guess ... unless its a particular mod. 36 from a certain police agency .. or something else that sets it apart its not rare. You see more of the round butt because people prefer them for carrying.
Other than that it sounds like youv'e got a couple of nice guns that you should enjoy for a long time.

Welcome to the Forum . . . nice to have you join us.

I agree with redsfan2 that pictures and serial number would help us give you more information. Some of the things we'll want to consider are barrel length (2" or 3") and whether it's a plain model 36 or a 36-1 with heavy barrel. The configurations we see most often are the 2" standard barrel with round butt and the 3" heavy barrel with square butt.

The earlier ones also have subtle differences such as the cylinder release latch type and whether the grips have the diamond around the screw escutcheon . . . not to mention things like whether it's a 5, 4 or 3 screw frame and whether it has a half-moon, flat or serrated ramp front sight.

There are many knowledgeable folks here who willingly share their insights. Collectively it's even possible for us to tell folks more than they wanted to know . . . but we enjoy learning from each other.

Russ

Same here. My 3in-36 , 2in-37 and 4in-63 are all square butt. The squares may be rarer than round butts , but it seems to me they are somewhat less desirable since there isn't a big selection of grips for squares.

Model 36 with 3 inch barrel and a square butt are very popular.

Craig Spegel makes a nice square-butt grip for the J-frames.

I'm not normally the jealous type, but dang! A 2 inch square butt blued 36 is my next purchase. I have a nickel 2 in square butt no dash already and I love it. I just want to get it's doppelganger. Beautiful guns man. I know round butt is a more desirable option by most, but I'll take a SB any day of the week. They just fit my hand better. I've seen that picture countless times when I Google blued SB mod. 36's and I have always loved it. Very nice!

Some may find the square butt models a bit easier to shoot well. They are not as concealable as the round butt guns.

I always preferred the SB snubs b/c, combined w/a grip adapter, they just fit my hands better.

Very nice gun!! That's one I hope to have soon! I have to ask, and I'm embarrassed I can't figure this out myself, but what does bbl stand for?? I can figure out just about anything else, but I haven't been able to decipher that one on my own. Thanks!

I fully agree. Round butt didn't fit my hand well at all. Thinking about a T grip, but with the J frames Doe that put your pinky on the bottom? I like all my fingers to fit on the frame, so if the pinky doesn't fit I'll have to really consider it before buying one. I definitely want one for my Model 15-3 snub. They look great!

I have one Square Butt M36 and while is is slightly harder to pocket carry, I do appreciate the SB Grips when shooting it!

While the Nickeled SB is less common than the Blued 2" RB, I would not say it is rare - just less popular.
