Default S&W Catalog 1968

A friend of mine called me up and asked if I wanted an old S&W catalog. I said sure! It's 10 pages of the full line with accessories and prices. Unfortunately 1 year too late to include the M24.

Here's a few tidbits:

44 Mag $165 Blue or Nick.

357 Mag (listed w/3 1/2") $143

M18 $89 bl only

M36 Ch Spl $76.50; M40 $82.50 M37 or M42 not listed although still made.

M34 Kit Gun $90 blue, $98 Nick; M35 $97 blue only; M43 & M51 $96 bl, $104 Nic.

N frame target hammer supplied with gun as ordered $4.25 as aftermarket part $7.15

Walnut target stocks $9.10 or $9.65 after

Magna or target stocks fancy grained woods plain or checkered with gun $10.45 aftermarket $11.00

McGivern gold bead sight on ramp base $7.70

SAT (screwdriver) $.85

Grip adapter, sm, med or lrg $1.55

Muzzle brake for K38 or 45 Target $6.60

.22 LR cylinder for M53 or M48 installed $33.00

Presentation case $11.00

.22 LR chamber inserts for M53 22 CF Magnum $.85 each

Default To put the $165 M-29 in persepective.

In 1968 I was a senior in HS and working a weekend job...think I made 90 cents and hour.

Bought a new 6" M-28 a year later...IIRC it cost me a tad under a hundred dollars.

Default 1966 Perspective

Part time job in grocery store $1.05 per hour. Summer of 1968 full time job in factory making 105 mm artillery shells, base = $2.65 per hour plus production bonus upto $0.30 per hour. 1967 college tuition for 1 semester was $147 and included "textbook rental".

In 1968, that M29 was ~ 50 to 60 hours labor at my pay scale. In 2010, prior to layoff / retirement the price was nominal 25 to 30 hours but there was a significant tax burden to pe paid first. 1960's, those were the good old days.

Default Correction to my original post

Thanks to another forum member:

The Model 37 is mentioned (w/ price) in the "Notes" of the Model 36,
as well as the M49 in the M38 notes, and the M42 in the notes of the M40.

Wink Me too!

[QUOTE=Frank237;136010877]In 1968 I was a senior in HS and working a weekend job...think I made 90 cents and hour.

Same year I graduated! 1968, My car would actually gain speed uphill and I could even afford to put gas in it a drive around for fun with a very hot 16 year old girlfriend. Camel non filter cigs for 25 cents a pack at the standard station.
I only wish I had been more into guns at that time. I have a 1968 model 37 and that is one reason I kept it even though I bought it to sell......
Enjoy,
gordon

I 1968 I was just finishing up in Training Group and was going to Vietnam. Went home on leave and used the money I had saved to buy several S&W Revolvers. And the good part.............I still have them.
