Default OZ Revolvers in USA ?

Guys, Gals,
Recently the State of South Australia on the Land of OZ purchased S&W MP 40 cal. They solld back to S&W all the revolvers they had used for the last 25 years, FOR $1.00 each!!! These revolvers have shipped to USA and will be refurbished by S&W and resold in any country other than Australia, (that is the agreement).
These revolvers, mostly K frames are in good condition overall, as in Australia crime is much lower than many other countries and the revolvers do not have much work.
Can any one from the forum tell me if they know of these revolvers being sold / distributed.
Have (I think done it correctly) posted a picture of my 28-2
Regards
Rod

I just sent them an email asking for any info they are willing to give about this. I will post what ever their response is. I can't wait to see a selection of 66's in stores.

On a separate note: It's really sad all the ill press this is getting. Besides admitting that they are being sold back, there is really no other news being posted since all the rest of the articles are slam full of opinion.

I would be surprised if they were being sold back for $1 each. If they were not making a fair amount of money to offset the purchase of replacements they would certainly destroy them.

Further update on this, The South Australian firearms being sent to US are mostly 66 both 2..5 and 4 inch. they are not used in anger too often, maybe ten police shootings in a year. Even on the range, the firearms only have minimal use. Each two year period the officers must holster requalify, the qualification is 10 rounds and the subsequennt training on the same day is approx 50 rounds. They are certainly minimally used firearms and except for the much older firearms that do suffer some blowback, are in excellent condition.

I'm sure there was more to the deal than the $1.00. Governments usually do not give anything away, the $1.00 is most likely a basic payment. The real savings to the Government would be the reduced price of the new S&W MP 40 cal.

If they are anything like other governments any money made on sales often goes to the good of the whole (read not the folks selling that item). I think you are right, they got a reduction in the initial price making it easier to justify would be my read.

Any one hears anything.........

....states, territories, Federal and various jurisdictions are all different here. Glock 17s were first issued to the Australian Federal Police (agents only not their community Policing sections). The Protective Services arm of AFP were issuing USPs at one point. Now as far as I know there are NO 9mms on general issue. Queensland, New South Wales, Tasmania, Western Australia, and the Northern Territory all use .40cal Glocks (22, 23 and 27) having started the change depending on state, in the early 90s. NSW was the largest having purchased 16K Glocks that stated on general issue from 1996 (special operations units of every agency made limited use of all kinds of self loading pistols from the 70s onward).

Victoria and South Australia were the last to cling onto their K Frame S&Ws but both are transitioning to M&Ps now. SA also replaced all their 66s in the last ten years though there will be some older models in stores. At one point they were taking delivery of new 66s AND M&Ps at the same time. There will be some bargains to be had. All have now left Australia and are in or on their way to the US.

Now there are other state agencies that issue .38/357 revolvers of a few different flavours, and at one time I worked for an agency that issued 6906s but went to Glocks around 2001.

The true deal on the M&P buy is as stated a combination of the trade value of the revolvers, the purchase price of the autos and the training, spares and after sales back up provided by S&W. So yes on paper the price may have been $1 but in reality it has offset far more costs than that figure indicates.

Here in NSW when the change to Glocks was ongoing we were destroying all the (predominantly) 3 inch square butt light barrel model 10s that were in service/stores as the Glocks went out.

Andy

That figures. My daughter picked up one of those 3" Model 10s a few years ago. It's one of her favorites and I've been kicking myself ever since for not getting one myself.

Will be watching for one of those bargains, though.

3" sq. butt light barrel 10s! I didn't even know there was such an animal. Did Aussy's bureaucrats destroy more of these than still exist? Anyone have a picture of one?

Not a great pic but here are a few...

My personally owned is at the bottom and my issued is second from the top. The personal one is gone now thanks to the change in laws out here in 2002. There are still a few of them soldiering on with some agencies here (Corrections and Govt Security types). I can get my hands on one for some detailed pics if so requested...

Oh yeah...the SA traded revolvers are unmarked so it will be hard to decide what is from here and what is not.

I was in the local shop today and overheard the sales guy talking about a pistol that was marked with something about New South Wales. I just assumed Webley but walked over to check it out. It was a 2.5 inch, squared butt model 10 in very good condition. Only wear was of the holster variety on the left edge of muzzle end, a few light scratches and a light turn line..the bore and chambers were dirty. On the right side of the pistol was the wreath logo marked New South Wales Police Department. It had no import stamp and was priced at $469. The shop owed me about twice that but the owner was not there to confirm a sale of the Smith to me in trade. I asked them to put it back and will pick it up on Monday. I called my go to Smith guy and he was kind of surprised and would call me back. He was not so sure about the 2.5 inch barrel but now that I see the above pics with 3 inch barrels mine is obviously shorter. I do not know the story on this particular revolver or if it is part of the "flood" of OZ police handguns..if so it is in remarkable condition. There have been a number of stainless Smiths from Australia in a local shop but none were marked in such a way that you would know this. I did not write down the SN but recall a D160xxx or thereabouts. Thank you webmaster for resetting my new E mail address and password..great job! Got it home today..it is a 2" barrel.

Nice, NSWP never sold any of their revolvers never, Govt/Service Policy, if it had been in NSWP inventory it would be hand stamped with "NSWP ###" on the front left flat of the frame, this was the number use to account for the firearm on service records (why not the serial number no one can answer, but this started with the transition to the M10s in 1965/66). There are two possibilities as to how a correctly marked model 10 is out there (thi being the second I have seen here), one is that a replacement side plate was "lost" and so fitted - I have seen that here but, more probably, either it was diverted from a shipment at the US end (over run/extra/novelty) or by one of the two Australian S&W importers that supplied the NSWP over the years. One of these was a notorious shonk so this would not surprise me at all....!!!!

That is just tragic! What right-thinking person could destroy any Model 10, much less a three-inch square-butt standard barrel?

I am fortunate to have 2 S&W's from the Land of Oz. A 10-5 3" square butt I got from J&G a few years ago stamped C.A.I. Georgia, VT. And a 10-10 4" round butt that I got from Bud's just before this last panic. This one has Victoria Police inventory decals which I shall not ever remove.

Yes it was ugly... !!!!! As each class attended to do the three day Glock conversion their Model 10 or Model 36 was just dropped into a milk crate and taken away. Serial numbers were recorded checked and double checked and they were then driven to Wollongong to the smelter where by serial number they were destroyed.

Default OZ Revolvers in USA ?

my 3" model 10-5 from Victoria had become my favorite SW revolver of all I own. I added Crimson Trace LG-207 laser grips to help as my night vision is not as good as it was back in the day.
