Default Determining Value?

How do you determine the value of a prospective purchase? I know that any one revolver is worth what a willing buyer will pay a willing seller and that this price may differ regionally but how does one determine condition/availability which will effect the negotiation process? When you guys talk about 96, 98% I know you are talking % condition out of 100% but where do I go to learn how this is calculated? Any "Blue book" of Smiths out there?

Also people ask when their gun was shipped. I assume there is a book with this kind of information as well?

Finally thanks to the person that posted the link that described the changes that are symbolized by the dash numbers.

Thanks for the help.

The book you want is titled Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson 3rd Edition by Supica and Nahas, within which you'll find a wealth of information on all the various models, a grading guide and a price guide (which may be a bit outdated now). Current values can also be determined by browsing the online auction sites to see what particular guns are actually selling for in today's market. Similarly, you can check forums such as this one where people sell guns.

The book is the Standard Catalog of Smith&Wesson 3rd Edition, though the pricing in there is outdated now, it will give you a rough idea.

FWIW, you can buy the Kindle version of Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson 3rd. If you don't have a Kindle, you can just download the free software from Amazon to use it on your PC. When I'm researching S&Ws on the web, I find it real helpful to have the book on my laptop.
