Rare Model 25 5 Inch Barrel
Hi
Here is the Information and some pictures on a really Rare Model 25-2
5 Inch Barrel. This is the only one that I have seen in a Model Marked
25. There were 9 of the 5 Inch barrels made in the Pre 25 5 screw guns,
I also have one of those. Until some body comes up with another one of these I guess this is the only one made.
It was a single shipment to Texas in 1962. letter is attached. It has the original box and all the paper work. Its a 98% plus gun.
Enjoy the pictures
Jim

Jim, congratulations on another spectacular find.
You are planning to open the Montana Museum of S&W rarities one of these days, aren't you?

That's a nice one, Jim. A real gentleman would repatriate that one to Texas.
Looking forward to seeing you and Judy in about a month.

I'll say it again . . . you guys amaze me at some of the stuff you turn up ! It would be a lot easier to understand if they were well used road-worn models, but to find such rare pieces in the condition displayed here by many of the collectors . . . amazing. Keeps the rest of us hopeful and looking.

I would not look for that to happen. He would have to get the Montana Natiional Guard to protect it all from the likes of us. And that is just one gun. In the past several weeks he has been struttin his stuff and if I was him, the closest anybody in this group would get is just what you see, pictures. Jim is an excellent judge of human nature, not to mention S&W's.
Jim, this one put me over the edge, Doc upped my Prozac for depression.

Jim, nice and rare example. It could as easily been a 25-1 given the shipment date and serial number.

Jim, leave it to the factory to screw up a perfectly good -1 Actually, this is yet another variation of the -1 that hasn't been seen. You need to swap me this for some old junker I might have laying around.

An absolutely beautiful gun.
Grant Ilseng's was a great store. Hated when it closed.

This has got to be my "drool" gun of the month!!
IMHO, S&W really missed the boat in not producing all the and N frame P&R era guns with a 5" barrel... I've never understood why this ideal barrel length was only produced in extremely limited production runs and for extremely short periods of time.
If I had this Mod. 25, Doc44s Mod 29 and 57 factory produced 5" guns I'd be one "happy camper"... I don't think I'll be holding my breath......

I agree with TDC, S&W should have cataloged the 5 inch barrel on more N frame targets than just the Model 27. I for one have always thought that the 1955 Target/Model 25 series would have sold well with 4 inch barrels, too. I guess that S&W had hitched their wagon to the Magnum chamberings back then, and guns marked '.45 Colt' and '.45 ACP' just weren't something they wanted to make many of.

I have, or used to have an old S&W catalog, '66, or '69, I believe that listed 4" 25's, but I've never seen one. The catalog was more like a flyer, heavy paper, red and white in color.

That's a very nice hawg-laig.
I love the balance of a 5" revolver, whether it is a K frame, a N, or even (gasp) a Colt.

Figuring for inflation from 1961 to 2015 that ten bucks for the special order barrel is about $80 now. I'd pay that to get a 5" barrel if they didn't offer it that way stock. Heck, you pay more than an $80 premium for a 5" Model 27 over a 6" one in any classified ad or auction you see.

That is one gorgeous looking 25. It really is a shame that Smith and Wesson didn't produce more 5 inch N frame wheelguns.

First, make sure you measure from the muzzle to cylinder face. Second, photos (especially of the muzzle and both sides of the barrel) might give a hint as to whether it is a factory 5", or the barrel has been cut or replaced. Lastly, a factory letter would confirm its originality - there is not a 5" 25-5 listed in the standard S & W reference book, but never say never.
Firearm History Request - Smith & Wesson
Hope this is helpful.

I am certain that I could not afford it if you were to sell it, and it is not even arguably something I need, but darn, I want it.
BTW: How are the cylinder throat dimensions?

bmg60 did have a great thread on a great collectable, 4 years ago. It appears 5 posters hoped on behind its revival without smelling a zombie thread. After he has time to notice the thread is up again I too am curious if anything is known about why it was assembled only to never be used.

WOW, WOW, WOW, bmg50... That Model 25! What a super combo of 'neat, beautiful, rare & factory original'. Pretty much unbeatable!!!
Seeing it and the very nicely post factory shortened one in this Thread leaves me thinking! Hummm.... of introducing my 25 (Barrel marked "Model of 1950") to 'Mademoiselle Guillotine' for a 5" barrel outcome! That length generally a personal S&W N frame sweet spot'. - But then of course, suddenly original Model 25 Smiths of all editions would skyrocket in value!
Yours the perfect solution if almost too nice! You sure have a winner in that elegant, essentially NIB gun! Thanks so much for the Thread & great pix!
My take
