Default Model 53 no dash

Picked this up last week. It is a no dash 53 serial K450XXX. It came with the Leupold scope mount with rings, box, papers, inserts and the 22LR cylinder. No tools though. It is in decent shape but has been drilled and tapped for a scope since the previous owner hunted with it. I also have two boxes of 22 Jet ammo as well. He has more ammo, dies, brass and bullets but I did not have the money to get all of it. The 22 LR cylinder is numbered to the gun so it is from S&W. Cannot wait to shoot this thing!!

I've always wanted one of those devils. Ammo would be impossible to get in Alaska, though. Have fun with it. It's a beauty.

You are going to love that thing! I second the thought of serious ear protection, for everyone on the range when you light it up!
Mike, you have to roll your own here in Wasilla.

The rear two do but the front was does not. The factory sight covers up the holes so it does not bother me. As for the ammo, he charged me $30 box (50) and wants $15 for 50 brass and $25 for 100 bullets. He only has two boxes left of ammo but like I said, I was short on cash. I assume these are good prices since you cannot get the ammo anymore.

I saw one of these this weekend at the local gun show and wondered what they are worth. It too had been drilled for scope mounts and the rear sight had been removed. He wanted $450 and I think I could have gotten it cheaper. From the sounds of things here they are not incredibly common.

A little bit of advice! You stole the ammo, it is usually $50-$75 a box. The best thing you can do is sell the ammo and go back to buy the brass, bullets, and dies! It is best to reload for this gun as the factory Remington ammo is too hot! This stuff is noted for "barrel burning", eroding the forcing cone from flame cutting and sticking the case in the cylinder after firing! If you reload you can load the rounds a little lower which will minimize the barrel burning and stop the sticking cases! With all the headaches it is still fun to shoot.
Good luck, jcelect

Can anyone tell me if the smooth or the checkered were the option on this gun? I did some searching and most of the 53's I have seen have the checked target grips.

Serious Ear Protection Exactly.
My 4" sounds like a cannon.
My 6" not much less.
My 8 3/8" shakes the ground and leaves fireball.
I am very lucky to have 4 of these beauties.

Finally had a chance to shoot it today. All I can say that the 22 Jet is one loud round and it makes one hell of a fireball. It was so bad that the flash blinded me. I was using Remington 40 gr ammo. I only fired 12 rounds but that was enough for me.

these are really reloading only propositions. the factory ammo is hard on the guns and as you notice, quite loud. if you load them down, they are just as fun and easier on you and the gun. factory has no more jet specific parts, so keep that in mind when you reload for it. I shoot mine at about 1500fps and is plenty for 100 yd. enjoyment.

Excellent find! I like the smooth targets on it. Another forum member just bought 3 boxes at $42 ea. (post was vacation find I believe) I would like to stumble on a reasonable 547 someday. You never know! Make sure you post a range report. Bob

Bob, I already did. As for grouping? I was only shooting it from 10-15 yards but the group was about the size of my fist for the most part.

The loudest handgun I can remember firing was a 10" Thompson Center Contender in .223 Rem....I'm guessing that the TC is worst............It quickly went down the road.
