Default 28-2 serial number

Hi, I just purchased my first s&w it's a model 28-2 highway patrolman I was wondering where the serial number was I see number where the chamber comes out but they aren't matching up with some of the ones you guys are showing. I was hoping someone could let me know if those are the serial numbers or if they are located elsewhere

It should be at the bottom of the grip frame. You probably have to take off the grips(stocks).

Sure we can, just post the number, replacing the last 2 or 3 digits with Xs. You S/N number should begin with either a "S" or "N" prefix. Such as S 123456. Write this as S 123XXX. One of us will give you a shipping date.

Value is a little tougher. Is it a 4" or 6"? Pics would help.

Welcome to the Forum Peytonsawyer!
I'd guess your gun has approx. 1979 ship date. We have alot of HP fanatics here - how about some pictures?

Very nice M28-2. Those grips appear to be a K frame grip and are a bit to small. I would think recoil would chew your hand up pretty good shooting it like that. The wood should come flush to the back of the grip frame.

I would think value would be in the $400-500 range, although regional differences do apply.

Have you had it to the range yet? If not, you are going to enjoy the way the N frame handles 357's. By the way, your 28 looks to be in very good condition. Enjoy shooting it. Here is a pic of my 28, approx. 1968.

I live out in the country so my backyard is my range! Yes I shot it yesterday and couldn't be happier with the way it handles. This is actually my first smith and wesson, my husband bought me a few rugers, but there's just something about those s&w revolvers i've always loved! It's in really good condition, the trigger needs to be cleaned but there's absolutley no holster wear or any flaws on the grips! I got it for $375, i'm not sure what its worth but when I saw it I had to have it. Any suggestions on a holster, I'm wanting a nice tan leather holster that's custom fit for the gun similar to the galco holsters, you know high rise and they lean forward a bit. I'd appreciate any help, and thanks for all the compliments!

Hello Marathon Man,
For what its worth, SCSW, 3rd. Ed., page 398, shows:

1966-1967 S262000 - S289999.

However,I have a model 29-2, S/N S2636XX, probably a little over a thousand less than your 28, which was shipped in April, 1965, so nothing is ever etched in stone with S&W.

I think you'd be pretty safe assuming a ship date of later 1965 or early 1966, but the only way you'll ever know for sure is with a factory letter.
Hope this helps,
teesur.

Welcome to the forum.

Very nice 28, and at that price, it's an awesome deal. You have done very well.

As was said earlier, the grips look to be for a "K" frame. Find yourself a good set of "N" frame grips and it will handle even better.

Peyton, Welcome to the Forum! Great deal on your 28! Save the grips, you can always sell or trade them. I bought a 28 no dash from 1960, paid $450. 95% + condition. Love shooting it! You can find grips here, or watch ebay. I have bought about a half dozen sets there. Enjoy your 28! Bob

Hi Peyton - congratulations on your first Smith & Wesson! You have a great gun at a great price. One caution though about "the trigger needing to be cleaned." The trigger (and hammer) are color case hardened, not blued. If what you are seeing (that needs to be cleaned) is a mottled greyish patterned color on the trigger, that is normal for an S & W. Maybe one of the many incredibly helpful folks on the Forum who has a camera or photo handy can show you what they are supposed to look like. Again congrats and enjoy!

Default YEAR MADE

I inherited my dad's duty weapon, S&W HIGHWAY PATROLMAN MODEL 28-2 SN/ S2900XX. Would you be able to tell me what year it was made? and what type of tools and grips it would have had on it? He was a bit of a hoarder so I am pretty sure he has all of that but I am not sure what I should be looking for. I do have the original box and paperwork.

Thanks,
Mrslightning

S2900XX
S290,000 – S304,999 Late 1967 – Early 1968 (manufacture)

Closest SN on my list is S2882xx which shipped on 9/22/67

Regarding the grips, exactly what does the box label say? Probably had football cutout target grips. It should have a cleaning rod with a couple of attachments and a sight adjustment tool (SAT), AKA a screwdriver.

That looks like it would be 1975, per the book.

Welcome to the Forum, MRSLIGHTNING.

Your M28-2 probably shipped with diamond Magna grips. It would have shipped with a small screwdriver, known as a sight adjustment tool (SAT), a cleaning rod and a swab.

Thanks for the year and finding the exact cleaning equipment might be tough, he had a lot of stuff. I just got back from putting the gun down in the safe Will bring it back up next time I am by the barn. Thanks again, my brother in law and I were unloading and documenting the guns, I saw this one and said MINE!!! Currently has Pachmayr grips on it which I like a lot for shooting. Thanks again.

Hello, just joined the site. I just bought a S&W 28-2 with a 4" barrel. It has the original box no cleaning kit. Serial number is N1xx. The box says issued 1970, is that when it was made, I couldn't find anything good on the internet? Whats it worth? The condition is very good.No bluing wear. The grips are from a K frame I believe, but I have the originals on the way. I have pictures but will have to figure out how to post them.

Thanks for your time

Hell RP, why do you think they are K frame grips? A few more pics would be great.

Peytonsawyer, your deal on that fine revolver falls just short of larceny.

My 28-2 has serial # S265XXX, and was purchased new on 9-28-65, according to the invoice. Not sure of actual ship date, but it was prior to 66-67. I don't think the serial numbers were used chronologically back then, as there always seems to be exceptions.

I thought that too, until I realized this was a necrothread and dated to 2011. Still a good deal, but not larceny in that time frame.

Adios,
