Cool I'm so torn

Bought a Houge monogrip for my 15-3 today. It feels so comfortable in my hand. Down side, it just takes away that uber-cool vintage look.

I'm such a wood grip and stock fanatic that sometimes I forget there are some advantages to other materials. Natural materials just have so much soul.

I see by your post-count that you are not brand new here,
and yet, somehow, you missed one of the Forum's first rules;
namely, that when in doubt, simply get enough models of a specific
firearm until each is the way you felt, at a given time.
Hey, works for me! I'm really looking forward to see if the new one
is as nice as this one. TACC1

That's why those grips are attached with screws.

Put on the fancy wood for show and tell and then use the rubber ones for the range.

I have come full circle as I have gotten older, in my younger years I took the diamond magnas off my pre-15 for a set of rubber hogues, recently I chucked the hogues in favor of some sandersons and the s&w gods are happy again.

I understand where you are coming from Brother I love the look of timber on my Smith's but the arthritic hands don't like the constant kicking of magnas so I have a set of hogues for my 4" model 28-2 as I just can't shoot with magnas on it it's just a matter of finding the right timber grips I only have Hogues on my 4" 28 as I'm still looking for a set of good timber for it. I shoot with timber on my 29, 6" 28 & my 686

So just use the rubber until you find a good set of timber

Clark, that is going to become a long list if you spend any time here.

Clark, put me on your wife's list. Heck, buy 3 or 4 stocks and find the ones you like, put them on, but KEEP the others. Just in case your taste in stocks change. Then buy several more. Yes, it can be a problem.

What he said.

Your wife has more than one pair of black dress shoes, doesn't she? Same principle. Stocks are shoes for the gun. Got to have the ones that fit the occasion. Presentation and combat style stocks are for different purposes. So you need both!

I absolutely have more stocks than revolvers, and actively accumulate even more. I daresay every single person reading this does too. If I have a perfect looking set of stocks that don't fit my odd-sized hands, I take them off and put on a set that does fit them. Then, if for some unfathomable reason I need to sell/trade the gun, I put the perfect looking ones back on and keep the ones that fit my hands.

Plus, if you already have spares, you can work the price down on a gun that has lousy looking stocks knowing they'll be off the thing 10 minutes after you get it home.

I have found the lovely factory target stocks OK for the light kickers like my .38's and .22's. Magnas are useless to me because I have large hands. For the hard kickers I still use wood. Hogue's wood monogrips, Ahrends and Altamont combat grips and some Eagle wood grips can and do fit hands well enough to tame recoil without ugly rubber. You just have to try different ones. Rubber is a lot cheaper, but I love the look and feel of wood.

I too am torn. I feel the need to put stock vintage grips on a 66, but I'm liking the looks of Altamont's K Square FingerGrooves Oversize Cut Checkered Silver Black (that's a mouthfull). Does anyone know if they leave the backstrap exposed? I've seen pics but none show the rear view.

As suggested, get a pair of wood Hogues.

FWIW back in 1979, when I got my 66, the very first thing I did was toss the S&W stocks and put on a nylon Hogue grip - it is still there!

Later S&W supplied their revolvers with Hogue stocks.
