Default Model 17-2 serial number

I am a new member of this forum and very interested in Smiths but maybe not exactly a S&W collector. I've owned several S&Ws over the years and still have one each of Models 17, 27 & 29 that I acquired in the mid-1960s, which I still own, and which I have no plans to part with. I know the production years for the .357 and .44 but don't know when my K-22 was made. I acquired it in about 1964 in near-new condition (which it still is) for $75 and about a year later added target grips, hammer and trigger for what would now seem a ridiculously small cost. The serial number is K552XXX. When was it made?

Welcome to the Forum. I believe your K22 was shipped in late 1963 or early 1964 . . . a factory historical letter would provide an exact ship date and destination.

Thanks, Russ. My best recollection, after all of these years, is that I bought this K-22 in the fall of 1964 while I was in college and it was in near-new condition. So the '63 - '64 production date seems right. How does one go about getting a letter from S&W?

At the top of the page task bar click on "Downloads" and select "Factory Letter Request Form". Complete and submit the form with $50 payment and Roy Jinks, Factory Historian, will respond.

I've found it helpful to enclose pictures and, in your case, Roy will likely note that the target hammer, trigger and stocks were added after it shipped from the factory . . . something you already know.

In most instances your K22 will have shipped to a stocking S&W dealer but occasionally one ships to an individual which adds to the gun's provenance.

Enjoy your time on the Forum and enjoy those S&Ws . . . you have three of the best!

Russ
