I'm trying to find the approximate serial number range for the 27-2's sold new in 1976.

According to SCSW-3, N300000-N400000 were shipped in 1975-1976.

That would be about 1973. In the future, you would get better results if you started a new thread.

If by "combat grips" you mean finger groove wooden grips that have the filler behind the trigger guard, the answer is No.

The modified M25-2 in this post, picture # 11, is wearing round butt N frame combat grips:

I believe the 3 1/2 and 5" barrel M27s in that era all had Magna grips as standard. Not sure about the longer barreled ones.

Checkered magna stocks of American walnut were standard on the Model 27 until September 1975 when it was upgraded by fitting each revolver with a target hammer, target trigger, checkered target stocks made of Goncalo alves, and shipping each revolver with a mahogany presentation case.
