Default Is this a fair trade?

I am looking for a nice (90+%) pre-18 K22. I have a couple of 3 1/2" 27-2s, so I was thinking about trading one of them for the K22.

The 27-2s are from the 1970s, one is in 92-93% condition and the other is in 95% condition. Would trading one of these revolvers for the pre-18 be a fair trade, or does it favor one of the sides?

Thanks

That one is a tough call. Just how bad do you want a pre-18? Personally I'd take a 3 1/2" 27 any day of the week, but if you have more than one and just have to have that pre 18..well..It may be worth it to you. I think I'd ask for a bit of boot, trading a .357 for a .22 and all.
That's one decision I'm glad I don't have to make, frankly. Hope it works out to your liking.

Talking

I can't speak for a pre 18 but all models 18's are high. I got lucky and scored a 98% 18-4 not pinned but recessed for $550 and I got an 18-3 P&R 98% revolver with box and all the goodies for $700. So these should be a guide when looking at a pre 18. A 5 screw pre 18 will bring a premium but in the condition you are talking it's definitely a shooter grade I think it's a $600 dollar revolver at best. I could be wrong but I watch S&W post war 22's pretty much every day because lately they have what I've been looking for and buying.

Model 27-2's with 3.5 inch barrel are really hot right now and the prices have really gone through the roof. I would think even you 92-93% 3.5 inch 27-2 with tight mechanicals is worth more the Pre 18 in 90% by at least $100.

Only you can decide when you make the deal if you are happy with it.

Today I bought two model 17's one a 17-1 4 screw with nothing but the revolver in 96% condition for $600 and it was made for 1 year. The second 17 was a 17-4 with numbers matching box that has almost no rounds through it for $600 so $1200 for the two. The 18 is a 4 inch so it's worth more in the right condition.

Well, every time I see one of these posts that asks about trading one very hard to find S&W for another I have to oppose the idea....

In this particular case the OP has two Mod 27 3 1/2" guns and that justifies the trade concept a bit more.

How many times do we read someone's agonizing post that they sold or traded a very difficult to find gun as opposed to a statement like, "Boy... I'm sure glad I sold that rare S&W and I'm glad I don't have it back." How about...NEVER!!

I can understand the desire to trade as money is always in short supply for many of us gun nuts. But I would try every other approach to try to buy the Mod 18 outright and avoid the trade. Both guns are substantially better than "money in the bank", and in our current economy that is a major consideration....
