Default S&W Model 10-7 question

According to my copy of Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, 3rd edition. The S&W Model 10-7 was made in 1977 and the Model 10-8 was made in 1982 when Smith & Wesson eliminated the barrel pin.

I just purchased this Model 10-7 and it comes with it's original blue one-piece box. This one will fit any 4" or 5" Revolvers, and includes the folding interior cardboard "wings", the Smith & Wesson Wax paper, and the plastic trigger "peg". It is marked "A Bangor Punta Company" on the box. Also has all of the original documents and accessories. The documents are marked Bangor Punta.

My Model 10-7 does not have a pinned barrel. Is it an odd ball creature or one that was made in 1982 or later before the 10-8 was stamped on the frame?

Serial number is AAM79##

The 10-7 production run spanned the period when the barrel pin was being phased out, so some will have the pin some will not. I have a 2in 10-7 with the barrel pin, the serial number indicates about 1979. It came in a dark blue 2 piece box.

The 10-7 is the taperd barrel. The 10-8 is the heavy barrel. Otherwise, they're the same gun and both were made from 1977-1988.

The pinned barrel was eliminated in both guns in 1982 and that's when the 3-letter serial number prefix began. There were no dash number changes at that time.

Plus one on what he said and your revolver was made in late 1982 and it was made after that model had had the pinned barrel eliminated.

Just to drive the point home:
The M10-8 followed the M10-7, but did not supersede it.

The M10-7 and the M10-8 were both in production simultaneously. If you liked the tapered barrel, you ordered the -7, otherwise, the -8.

S&W did this with some other models as well. It can be confusing as this was not their normal practice.

10-7 5D163xx

Any idea of a closer date shipped date than 1977 to 1988?

Looks like it is 1979 by the replies here. Thank you.

It has about the best trigger I have seen in a long time.

Well I would not say it like that. They were both introduced at the same time.

Quote:

This is a correct statement.

Here's the larger story:
10-2, 10-3 introduced at the same time (1961). Change threads on extractor rod. Even number = tapered barrel; odd number = heavy barrel. Sight width change on heavy barrel only.
10-4 simplified cylinder stop, eliminating the trigger guard screw on tapered barrel only (1962).
10-5; 10-6 introduced at the same time (1962); odd number = tapered barrel; even number = heavy barrel. Sight width change on tapered barrel. Simplified cylinder stop, eliminating the trigger guard screw on heavy barrel.
10-7; 10-8 introduced at the same time (1977); odd number = tapered barrel; even number = heavy barrel. Gas ring moved from yoke to cylinder on both models.
10-9; 10-10 introduced at the same time (1988); odd number = tapered barrel; even number = heavy barrel. New yoke retention, radius studs, floating hand, etc. on both models.

I hope this clears things up for you.

Much the same information but arranged differently:

10-1 (1959): Heavy Barrel
10-2 (1961): change extractor rod thread for standard barrel
10-3 (1961): change extractor rod thread for heavy barrel, change front sight width from 1/10" to 1/8"
10-4 (1962): eliminate trigger-guard screw on standard barrel frame
10-5 (1962): change sight width from 1/10" to 1/8" for standard barrel
10-6 (1962): eliminate trigger-guard screw on heavy-barrel frame
10-7 (1977): change gas ring from yoke to cylinder for standard barrel
10-8 (1977): change gas ring from yoke to cylinder for heavy barrel
10-9 (1988): new yoke retention system, radius stud package, floating hand hammer nose bushing for standard barrel
10-10 (1988): new yoke retention system, radius stud package, floating hand hammer nose bushing for heavy barrel
10-11 (1997): MIM hammer/trigger + floating firing pin for standard barrel
10-12 (1997): MIM hammer/trigger + floating firing pin for heavy barrel
10-13 (2002): limited production 1899 commemorative edition
10-14 (2002): internal lock

ibewbull- I purchased this 10-7 brand new in 1979. Serial is 5D14724 so only about 1,600 earlier than yours. Pretty safe bet yours is from the same time frame.

That would be 1983 ..

Do I assume that a 3D.....was manufactured in this time frame? Gave $275 for the pistol, very pleased. Thanks for an answer!

Picked this one up recently.
Interesting that some PO set it up with TT and TH. Also red sight insert. Have to wonder if it was built for some specific competition.

The year would be 1984. Someone here may be able to give you the approximate month. What it would sell for would depend on a lot of factors. Can you describe its condition, features, etc? Pictures help a lot.

Little bit of a thread resurrection but I would like to know if a 10-7 is still considered a M&P? Or was that designation for earlier models. Thanks

Before model numbers were assigned in mid-year 1957, S&W revolvers had only model names. The K frame fixed sight guns were called the Military & Police model (the vast majority, but not all, of them were chambered for the .38 Special). In 1957, this model was given the designation Model 10.

When the model marked guns started shipping to dealers in 1958, they retained the model names. In the case of the Model 10, it was the Model 10 .38 Military & Police revolver. Without going into the nonsense that the company is now indulging, the foregoing never changed.

That's the long answer.

The short answer is the Model 10-7 is a .38 Military & Police.
