28-2 with diamond targets
A friend has a chance to buy what we are told is a 28-2.Have not seen gun yet but have an e-mail picture taken by a cell phone.Picture is dark and blurry but the stocks are diamond targets. It is a 4" gun.We don't know serial no. yet.If the stocks are original would they be numbered to gun? Also if original would that mean this gun is a 1969 or earlier s serial number gun.Price is $450.00 but the seller might come down.If gun is in 90% plus I know it is worth it.Thanks for any help.

Stocks are probably not original. Targets could be ordered but S&W did not number them.

Happy, generally & I do mean generally because nothing is ever written in stone with S&W's, the diamond grips were discontinued in 1968. The targets were not normally standard on the model 28 as they usually wore magna stocks. Having said that, there are exceptions. Also as a general rule, the targets had ser. #'s only for a certain few models like the early pre model 25 (55 target) and then for a short time. I don't have my book with me but I think you may have an N ser. # gun and I believe that it will nullify the exceptions stated above in that it probably wore magnas and if the targets are numbered it will be to a different gun. Now all of that is worth what you paid for it. If the grips are in nice shape and the gun is a 90% gun, I think the price is OK, especially if those targets are the non relieved type.
Best of luck with it.

if it is an N serial numbered gun...and the gun itself and the grips are in very good shape..then it is still a nobrainer at $450...the n diamond targets are $100+

Target stocks
FWIW--looked at a Pre 28 the other day--it was wearing a set of non relieved diamond targets that were serialed to the gun--shipped in April of '56.

Jim, I have one of those with the same stocks numbered to the gun. That's why I said "generally" Never say never.
