Question NYSCD

I have recently acquired a Model 10-5 # D33xxx with the factory letters NYSCD on the backstrap. I believe that it was made in 1969, and marked for the New York State Correction Department. Can anyone tell me how many were so marked? The revolver appears to be unfired. Thanks, Al Wait

It's probably 'New York State Conservation Department'. (mid 1920's to 1970)
Now known as the NYSDEC,,New York State Dept of Environmental Conservation since 1970.

Perhaps there is a historical section somewhere on their website.
Or simply contacting them off the website might yield some info.

As I recall the Corrections Dept equiptment was marked NYSDOC (Dept of Corrections)

agree with 2152- nyscd- would be conservation as in game warden -they are now called ECO's environmental conservation officers.
Prison guns would be NYSDOC new york state depatrment of corrections

New York refers to their state corrections as "Department of Correctional Services". Not sure what the acronym they use is.

Default NYSCD

Thank you all for your responses. Jim Supica's book suggests Corrections Department, but I guess it could be Conservation. The question, of course, is what the initials stood for in 1969, not today. Al Wait

Now DOCS (Dept. of Correctional Services) is called DOCCS (New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision)......after a consolidation of agencies.

The state did not call corrections DOCS until Jan. 1, 1971, not sure what it was called prior.

When I entered the NYS Department of Correctional Services (today it is referred to as the The New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision) in 1981, we carried only one type of revolver, it was the Smith & Wesson Model 10 - 4" Heavy Barrel and the 2" version of the Model 10. We were only authorized to carry .38 Special 158gr. round nose lead. PERIOD!

All our firearms for all facilities was purchased at the agency in Albany and depending on what contract the revolvers had several different stamps. The NYSCD was one of the stamps used for our department.
