S&W smooth target grips

Can anyone tell me anything about the grips on this model 15-3 that I just picked up?
Know they are not likely original to this gun. Have seen grips like them from time to time, but don`t really know much about them.
Were these strictly S&W replacement grips, or were they standard on some models?

I've got a pair on my M10-6 OSHP Commerative...Smooth Presentation Targets.

And on a 27-2

Yep , factory grips. Smooth presentations were sort of substitute/standard. Not as numerous as checkered grips. I'm sure they could be special ordered. Seems more like random to me. And of course they could be purchased seperately. So whether or not they are original to any gun would take a letter.

Smooth target stocks could be ordered with a revolver, but rarely were. Smooth targets were "standard" on engraved guns and are often original when found on 1950 Target 44s with a 4-inch barrel. Most smooth target stocks were purchased separately and used as replacement stocks.

I would speculate the target stocks on your 15-3 are replacements for the original checked Magna stocks.

You have a good lookin' set of stocks there, they're right at home on your Mod 15.

Smooth targets or "presentations" are the best looking grips IMHO, second only to Rosewood smooth targets.
(Well... maybe the fabled "Cokes" beat 'em out.

)

I put a set on the 6 inch version of your gun, a Mod 14. I'd leave those on if it were mine.

I bought a new Model 53, 6" barrel, .22 Remington Jet in 1965 with the smooth presentation target grips on the revolver. The gun had been special ordered with a 4" barrel and came with the 6" instead. The customer refused to buy the gun. I don't know if the grips were special ordered or not. I still have it, still shoot it and really like those smooth grips. Keep shootin'

I have no intention of switching them out. Looks good, and feels good in the hand. Can`t ask any more than that from a set of grips.

Back in the good old days using 125s exclusively in M-19s it was noted that smooth targets didn't torque that patch of skin out of your right palm after a week on the range like checkered stocks did.

These look like Goncalo Alves, but I had some an'60's or early '70's on K-22 that were rosewood. I'm sure you get them in walnut also
