Default "Range report" S&W 25-5

A week or so ago, I picked up a S&W 25-5 in 45 Colt. In spite of the fact that I'd owned a Mitchell Arms 45 years ago, and owned a box of 45 Colt ammo for about 20 years or so (the price on the 50 round box was $15.95 if that gives you an idea how long) I had never fired one.

Yesterday, I stopped by the range with the 25-5 and that box of ammo (255 gr lead bullet, Blazer aluminum case). I didn't bother with a target, just tossed a gallon milk jug up against the berm and shot at it. Man that was some fun.

Almost no recoil to speak of, not much more than a 38 I guess. Just a big BOOOOOM, a slight muzzle jump and back on target. Well, if the target hadn't jumped ten feet in the air, and I had to wait for it come back down. I pretty much wasted the whole box of 50 making that jug dance around. Even my wife got into the act and fired a few rounds (Can I try it?"). The D/A trigger is slick, the S/A is crisp.

When we were finished we had a milk jug full of holes, and a bag full of empty "brass". The reloader in me hated to throw that stuff away, let me tell you.

That's my scientific range report. Plinking is fun. It's more fun with a big gun.

Now to get some reloading stuff for 45 Colt.

I think the 45 Colt is my favorite pistol cartridge. Definitely get the dies and take advantage of all the loading options. I was in Walmart yesterday and a box of 20 Winchester was $22, I recall a few months ago they were like $18. I have a US Firearms SA, but I would like to get my hands on a M-25.

You sir, have found one of life's little pleasures....Carried a 25-5 on the street from 1980 until recently in partnership with a Winchester 94 AE in 45 Colt as well. Between the two, in close to 30 years, they have always done the trick.
Had to upgrade(if you will) recently to a 1911 and an m-14....

What length is you barrel? My brother's is a 6 inch, and I believe it is his favorite revolver. At the range today, I picked up a whole bunch of .45 ACP cases someone left behind. I have a few thousand cases I acquired in the late '70's from qual firing, but I just couldn't resist. I'm sure you understand.

Sounds like you had a good time. I don't shoot my 25-5 often but I do enjoy it.

I just bought the 45 colt setup for my Dillon. Now I don’t need the Lee carbide dies. If you want them let me know what you think is fair.

I myself just got a 25-5 a couple of months ago. Wow! I could kick myself for not getting one sooner. Good luck with yours.

Very nice. I've been loading the 45 Colt for a few years. I have a three 25s, just not the 25-5.

Light target loads with Clays. Bullseye, Trail Boss or Red Dot and 200 gr lswc get most of the range time.

I have heavier loads which are safe in the S&Ws, but I shoot them in the Rugers and the 1892 Rossi Puma. I have some loads just for the rifle. There are some good articles on high end loads, and they are fun to work out, but I shoot hundreds of the 200 gr targets loads to every dozen heavy loads. Easier on the guns, Easier on the arthritic hands.

Every 4th of July I shoot 200 45 Colt Blanks. This year I used 15.7 gr Triple 7, a 1/4" cardboard plug for .410 reloading, sealed with hot glue and a slight roll crimp. LOUD!. Double ear protection. 8-12" flame out the barrel. Very nice.

Very Nice! I would love to find a 25-5. Love the .45 Colt and it's younger brother the .45 ACP.

.45 Colt is one of my favorite calibers. Sounds like an enjoyable day at the range. Too many people seem to have forgotten about the pleasures of simply plinking.

Mine is a 4" Mac.

I do understand about the brass. I've got a fair ammount of 5.56 that I picked up and no rifle for it. Who knows. Maybe one day...

I don't know how you all do things up there in Virginia, but down here
we post photos of our new heaters.

Very glad you like it and the wife too. I made the discovery a few years back
and kind of took it to the next level.
Still looking too....

Here is a picture until you can get a shot of yours.

Pick any one. They are all Smiths in 45 Colt.

Good luck

Oh, well, I had just posted a picture of it a couple of days before, but no problem. You can twist my arm to get me to do it again. (ouch...ouch...ouch)

I've added a Tylers T-Grip since the picture.

I still haven't fired my newly aquired 25-5, nickel, 8 3/8" pinned. I'm waiting for my shipment of more ammo to be delivered. From what you guys are saying I'm in for a treat. Congrats on your new piece.

Beautiful Cajun, and I do like p.c. magnas on a 4" N frame.

I'm curious about the serial # prefix and whether your chamber throats
and oversized or not.
You could post or p.m. me if you wish.

Good luck.

I love mine.

I let a friend fire mine with some hard cast lead reloads. The sun was behind us and you could see the bullet arc to the target. I wish that I had my camera with me.

Who needs a 25-5? Not me! Not one!

So I got three of 'em. They are addictive!

Here is my newly aquired 25-5. Seems like pics of this model look so much better in the great outdoors.

Yep any 4" N Frame that starts with a 4 is a good one to have.
