Default Any Issues with the Model 60 No Dash ?

I've got a chance to trade for a very nice Model 60 no dash. Are there any issues with that model that I need to be aware of ? Also, when was the no dash made ? I believe 1965 was the first year but when did they change to 60-1 ? Thanks all.

IIRC the no dash was made well into the 80's 90's?? The only issue is they shoot way better than they should, and you end up shooting up a lot of ammo.

I guess it depends on what the serial number is on the gun. Once they got settled into building them and the serials move to the "R" prefix, I think they're all OK. Yes, they're very good shooters.

But the very early ones used stainless everything (none of this total titanium BS). But stainless steel didn't turn out to be a very good material for some parts. I believe the hammer and trigger were the main problems. The recall covered those parts and the factory just replaced them with flash chromed standard parts. No change in the corrosion resistance, no change in the function. Maybe someone else here can comment on the failures that prompted the change/recall.

My older one with a 410,000 serial has the newer parts. I'd prefer the original ones.

Oh wait. For the posters who always say S&W never plated the hammers (usually said in reference to determining refinished guns). This is a glaring exception to that rule.

The model 60 is one of the guns in which the engineering changes didn't necessarily replace an earlier version. The 60 was made from 1965 to 1988, with pinned then unpinned barrels. The -1 and -2 were special runs, and the -3 finally replaced the 60. You'll have a hard time finding a bad one. Hope this is helpful.

Thanks guys. I've already got a Model 60 .357 that I bought sometime around 1999 but I've always wanted one of the .38 versions too.
Just wanted to make sure there weren't any issues with the earlier versions that I wasn't aware of.

A fine revolver! Will handle +P's, but on a limited basis IMHO. Got a bunch of 'em and they never let me down.

If you want to shoot a LOT of +P's, go with the M60-7 or higher, they were heat treated for the load.

My only issue with the Model 60 is there isn't one in my safe yet.

IIRC the stainless parts didn't "rub" against each other well

Hard to believe this thread resurrected after lying around for seven years. By now, I would hope the OP found a good 60 to add to his rotation. Mine is an unpinned ADR prefix that I was told dates to 1982. I bought it a couple of years ago to replace th 642 I sold to a friend. I refinished the grips with Tung oil and added a Tyler T. It's a little tank that I love owning and carrying in a coat pocket while working around our place or riding my motorcycle.

The 60-1 came out in 1972.

Just to add to the confusion, there were ‘two’ model 60-1s; the 1972 version (3” pinned bull barrel) and the 1985 (2”, Target sights).

The only issue with mine is that my daughter has it and won't give it back. Proving that she is a smart young lady!
