I saw some stag pieces for sale at my local Dog food place.
Had to try it.....$40 for two oversized pieces and a few days work. It cost $1.89 an ounce. I picked pieces that had a lot of outside solid and avoided pieces that had a lot of 'core'.
I cut them on the bandsaw, so I had almost all the outside hard edge to work with.
I've done ivory on my SAA's and Bisley's, even used Mastadon ivory on a Bowie....never did stag. It works like ivory, and buffs up on the wheel with a white stick.
I 'strop' sanded them to get the round shape.
Feels like ivory with a nice texture....

those are nice! i use stag on my forged high carbon and damascus blades, and i have done some grip inserts on a ruger gp-100. i would like to see the inside of the grips, also never heard of a dog food store that have stag, what was the store.

Welcome! You know, I get all puffed up and proud of myself when I fit a grip or modify one to suit me, but man you did a great job there! Well done.

SWEEEET! I had been thinking of the same idea for my Baby Chief and now you've gone and showed how good it will really look. I especially like the way you have a little of the "bark texture" showing with the rest polished out. They have real class. Thanks for sharing.

Shed antlers make good dog chews. You can find them on eBay or I deal with this guy locally: Michigan Antler Art - Home

I just went to my local Pet Warehouse store today and they had gotten in their "Christmas Stock." They had some nice large sections of what they referred to as "elk antler" chews for about $20, so I picked one with a lot of nice thick outside layer and sort of flat areas as well. I hope I can make some grips for my Baby Chief that are even half as nice as yours. Thanks again for the great idea! :D

Nice...you done good! I like piddling with Sambar Stag, Elk, and Whitetail deer antler. You're right on the money with the white buffing compund...it works things up nicely.

Your work like like that of a pro. Very good indeed.

You made it look easy. Until one tries it, it can be harder than it looks to do truly nice work like yours.

Just an FYI about stag and not a criticism of you.
There are many mis-nomers in the world with no exception in the gun world. One very common one is stag vs. antler and is usually harmless but I hate to see anyone taken advantage of by paying true stag prices for antler. I'm not saying you did because you didn't!

But for the record 'true' commercially available stag is primarily (with a few exceptions) India Sambar Stag and German Stag which only comes from those two countries' Stag deer species respectively. Other material commonly available commercially and falsely called stag is elk and deer antler. True stag is antler that only comes from the Stag species of the deer family and known for its beautiful deep, rich "bark". German stag is whiter beneath the bark while India Stag is generally more creamy colored and both have become hard to obtain and consequently more expensive. Therefore more antler from bulls and bucks of the deer family is currently on the market.
