The 17-2 probably was shipped with Magnas stocks but it should of had a bright blue finish.
This is my 17-1 with target stocks that I put on it
This is my 17-4 I with orginal magna stocks that I put on it.

K-22's from the earliest post war guns to the mid 50's were standard in a "Brushed Blue". Intermittantly they were offered with "Brite Polish" as a special order, and are rarely seen. After about Serial Number K250,000 the polish becomes more refined and by the time they are model marked, the finish is brighter. By the magical K300,000 period the blue is deep and mirror-like. In my opinion, some of the finest blue to ever come out of S&W occurs in the 1960-1965 era.

17-2
The collector I spoke with had a 17-2 with flat finish and I've seen a couple of others like that. I wonder if the first 17-2 years had low gloss finish. This guy says he is an expert and all 17-2 finishes were low gloss and all the examples that I have emailed him were re blued and the target grips are aftermarket even offered to buy my grips. AS you can tell Im really confused now.

I agree, the blue on this '60's K-22 is a good example.

Don't worry about it, I have a coupla' reblued K-22's and they get outta' the safe more than any other. Shoot it & smile.

Anyone who says they understand everything about what Smith & Wesson has done, does today, or will do tomorrow should be able to give us an understandable unified field theory that could be printed on the back of a box of cornflakes.

Chuck- your grips could certainly have been changed out. Do they number to the gun? Do you have a target hammer and trigger.. the only way to know for sure how it shipped is to get the letter.
