My dads S&W 22 (pic)
I have my dads S&W. I think is a K model, but I din't know much about it. I think he purched it in the 40's. He was always proud of this revolvers but this one especially.
I did not know if I should post the serial number or any other marking but here is some pic. It is a 22 long rifle.

That looks like a very nice K-22 Masterpiece (Pre-Model 17)
The fact it has four address lines on the right side make it 1948 or later according to SCSW.
If you post a partial serial number we can give you a better idea as to the ship date from the factory.
Serial number will be on the butt of the frame.

It`s an old K22 Masterpiece. And in pretty nice shape for its age.
Need the serial number to get a better idea of the date. Feel free to X out the last 2 or 3 numbers of the serial number if that makes you more comfortable about it.
Such as K731XX.
If it was made after WWII, probably has a K prefix.

post the serial number and replace the last 3 digits with XXX.
Not everybody wants the world to know the serial # of their guns.

I usually post the number with the last two as an X. For instance, my Model 28-2, manufactured around 1980, is N5964xx. People will be able to tell about when it was manufactured, maybe when it was shipped if they have a similar number, but that is about it. Only a good guess by an LEO could ever come up with your actual registration information. Chances are pretty good that your father's weapon is not in a database anywhere, given when it was manufactured and when he purchased it.

As someone else suggested, you can post the serial number with the last few numbers "x'd" out, for example K150xxx, this is perfectly safe. The serial number would be on the butt, the back of the cylinder, and the flat under the barrel. The serial number may also be stamped on the inside of the right grip panel.

It probably shipped from the factory in the middle of 1948. A letter from the S&W historian, Mr Roy Jinks, would give you an exact date and to whom it shipped.

According to the serial number range listed in SCSW, your revolver dates to 1948. It's understandable that your Dad was proud of it, it's a fine example of a post war 5 screw K-22 Masterpiece.

5 screw refers to the number of screws in the side plate of the frame. You probably only see 3. One is hidden by the top of the right grip, another on the trigger gaurd.
Later versions of the gun had 4 screws and then 3 screws.
S&W collecting has it`s own slang and short hand.
The gun should stay in the family.
Don`t be afraid to shoot it and enjoy it. As long as you keep it cleaned and well cared for it should look nearly as good as it does now in another 60 years.
The little model 18-2 below (very similar to your K22) was made in 1962. This one is a 3 screw model. The 2 side plate screws you can see in the right hand pic and 1 under the grip. By 1962 the other 2 side plate screws had been eliminated from the design.
It belonged to my grandfather. It has been shot quite a bit, but well cared for, so it`s hard to tell without very close examination.
This gun was out of family hands for many years. Now that I`ve got it back, it`s not going anywhere. At least not as long as I`m around.

Me?
Hell, I`m 3rd string compared to a lot of people here.
I just know enough to make people "think" I know what I`m talking about.

Well, I'm curious to see if anything happens when you post a complete serial number. The fear I hear most often expressed is that someone would claim the gun was stolen from them. You do know that filing a false police report is a felony, right? And cops are NOT stupid enough to fall for such an obvious ruse, right? You do know that in the history of gun discussions on the Internet not one case of anyone having problems from posting a serial number is documented, right?
But lets find out for ourselves. For nearly 10 years I have been posting 70G30498 which is the serial from a Colt Government Model I own. So far... nothing. But this is the S&W Forum so I'll post a couple Smiths. Here are S140775 and S143776.
Hum dee dum dee dum... Anything happen yet? I'll keep waiting...

Thanks for sharing. I love family guns. As others have said, shoot it, care for it and most of all, enjoy it the way your grandfather apparently did.

Nope. Can`t think of any way to scam you out of them.
But those are such great looking wheel guns I would sure be tempted to try if I were a little less honest.
Guess I`ll just have to be content to drool over the pics.
