Default Antique 38?

Hello all. I'm new to the thread, and to be honest I'm only here with a question as I'm an automatic guy! I'm sorry but I'm forever in love with all things Colt and Kimber in the good old .45ACP.

Anyway, I have a question. My Grandfather passed away about a year ago. He left several guns to me, and I have never done a lot with them other than clean them and put them away. Recently I've been looking at them and have come across a S&W 38. It has no markings other that is sais it's a 38 SPL. I do own a gun book, and I think this is a model 36, but I'm not sure. I was hoping someone here could tell me something about this gun.

So...it is a 5 shot revolver, and the serial number is 440J94. Thanks in advance for any info on this piece.

Jon

If it's an all carbon stell gun, it's a Chiefs Special Model 36. Open the cylinder and look at the yoke of the frame, it should MOD 36. It came out of the factory in 1971-1972 per the serial number.
