I have a LGS, who aside from being a good source of Smiths is a very close friend and wonderful person, when they get a used S&W in, I get a call. They aren't too knowledgable about them but they know they can trust me. They give me a description and honest evaluation and if they are unsure what it is they have, ask good questions. In return I give them honest answers as to what it is, what it is worth etc. That gives them an idea what to offer for a fair trade. In return for this service I get first crack at the gun, usually at a much reduced price compared to what they normally would ask others. If I don't want/need it, they put it on the shelf at a normal markup.
This arrraingment has brought me some great revolvers over the years, they trust me not to low ball them and when I say 'put it back' they know I'll be in for it. I don't 'haggle' with them after giving them an honest estimate and they treat me well.
An example: a .44 special Lew Horton 3" 624 NIB, a few years ago they got this in and called, I told them that it would easily bring $600 (this was a few years ago) I ended up with it for $450. Still have it.
I've saved them thousands of dollars over the years by waving them off of 'deals' that were just attempts to take advantage of them. This has proved to be an advantagious relationship for all of us, Trust is the key, and we trust each other implicitly.
I wish all shops would operate like this one, but I think this is most likely a once in a lifetime relationship. Hope it lasts for a long, long time.
