Default Question regarding 27s and 28s-your personal opinion?

Hi folks,

Looking at getting my first N-frame to add to my collection. See, I have a j, k, and l frame, but no N-frame. I take it as a sign on what my next gun should be

I am looking at either a Model 27-2 or Model 28-2 in the near future, likely after the holidays, for a target gun.

In your opinion, do you need to have 90-95% finish for it to be a target shooter, or is something like 80% appropriate? And on that note, how much would you pay for something like that? I've seen some 28s with 80-85% of finish remaining going for between 400 and 500 dollars on gunbroker.

Thanks for your opinions! I appreciate this pool of knowledge this forum offers...

If you're just going to shoot targets who cares about finish, or lack of it? In that case one without a great finish should be much less expensive.
I've bought two 4" 28-2s this year, both with very good finishes. I've got $400 in one and less than $450 in the other. They are out there at those prices if you look. A 27-2 will be more expensive, although deals are there if you look hard enough.
Keep your eyes open and you'll find something you like.
The smaller frame revolvers are great, but there's just something special about the N-Frames.

I agree with the "something special about the N-frames"...I'm envious of my father's 27, but I'm drawn to the 28 HP...mostly because of the price difference, and no one in my family has one yet.

Rogue,

As you specify "target" usage, you probably won't care as much about an 80% finish as you will about mechanical condition. Also, for a target gun, a barrel longer than the more popular (generally) 4" version should play to your benefit for the lower prices of the longer-tubed examples. A 28 will max-out at 6", I believe the 27 can be had, longer, still.

If you just want to shoot it, go for a 28. They are the "utility" version of the 27 and do the exact same job

I got good deals on all 3 of my 28's, one was a heavily worn 4" that I ended up scoping, one was a factory refinished 6", and the other was a 6" that was D&T'd so I scoped that one too........now I just need an honest, unmessed with 4" and 6" 28 to leave alone

There is nothing that the 28 won't do that a 27 will do other than keep you from shooting it because of the finer finish.

If you want to shoot, handle, and enjoy your big ol N frame get a 28.

If you want to stare at it , fondle it, wipe it off and put it away, then by all means pay extra for a 27.

I've bought 3 27's in the last year and fired 12 rounds through one of them.
I had a 28 that I carried as an LEO, it rode in my pickup on the ranch for 20 years, and was used all of the time for serious and fun duties.

Good luck in your decision.

For the price of a 27 you can get a 28, send it out for a trigger job, AND buy a load of ammo.

My 28's funky matte reblue finish doesn't affect the way it shoots at all. Someone had either shot the big revolver A LOT or had an action job done to it some time in the past, as it is much smoother than other S&Ws I've tried.

Personally, for a range gun I'd prefer something with a rougher finish that was in good tune. That way I wouldn't feel any guilt about using it, which wouldn't be the case with a really pristine model 27. In that view I'd specifically look for a model 28 simply because it would be more likely to show some use. However, I certainly wouldn't pass up a well maintained model 27 that had seen use.

The 28 is exactly thye same gun as the Model 27 less the high luster blue and the steel checkered top strap. So for target shooting I would get a Model 28 and shoot away to your hearts content. You just heed to decide if you want the 4 inch or 6 inch barrel if it's going to be a range gun.

One thing about the M27 is that you can get one with an 8-3/8 inch barrel, which should give it an edge in the target shooting, everything else being equal. The longest barrels M28s were offered with was six inches. As a plus, usually the 8-3/8 inch barrel M27s aren't as popular as their shorter counterparts, so you may be able to get a nice one for about what you'd pay for an M28.

If you take good care of the M27, you can't hurt its value much at the target range, assuming you transport it in a protective case and clean it properly.

Before I read this post I was sure I was going to shoot my new 27-2 3 1/2" ANIB. Now I am looking at my 28's for noise makers.

I will shoot it this week, I bet.

Regards

Bill

I have owned both, and I have shot several of each, belonging to my buddies. I could not tell any difference in accuracy between the two.

The Mod 27 comes in more different barrel lengths.

For strictly target/range use I would go with at least a 6" barrel.

I bought an unfired pre-27 8 3/8" for a song. It looks nice and shoots absolutely fantastic. I"m sure I could have saved it and got a return on my investment, or left it to my kids to sell it for a big profit.

I didn't. I'm shooting the **** out of it and being happier for it. When the time comes my kids can lose money on it.

I have a 28 that I bought from a forum member with TT/TH/TS, in great shape, 98-99%, and it is getting ready for a trip to S&W for a RR/WO sight addition, due to my 58 year old eyesight. Then, it will be shooting time. I had a six inch, sold it, and regret it. Anyway. The comment about staring at it, wiping it down, and putting it away applies to most of my guns. But I have always considered the real nice, and in some cases rare, S&W N Frames more as art than as tools. I can't think of anything any more eye catching than a polished pristine n frame sitting in a presentation case. The 28 always seemed to have a more durable finish. Is that the case? Anyway, I plan for it to punch a lot of holes when everything finished. I wouldn't do that with my others. The 28itis hasn't hit like 27itis has, so if you see a nice one at a good price, grab it. My $.02.

I saw a reblued 27 for $350 at a gun show, so shooter grade 27's are out there.

6" 28's seem to bring less than the 4" models, in my experience. 6" 28's also seem more common.

Also, if you want a 3.5" 27, it's going to cost you............those are the most sought after, with the 8 3/8" 27's being the least expensive.

I love model 27s

.......all of them.

I own many 27/357/627s. But I only have a 4" and 6" model 28 just to have them in the collection. I have never even considered not shooting a model 27 because I could get a model 27 with a cheaper finish on it.

If this is intended to be a shooter, who cares if it has zero finish on it. When you can afford another, you will add another or you will refinish this one.

For target shooting, I like the wide hammer and trigger that is found on many model 27s. These same features are found on very few model 28s. That is worth some extra money for me. Also model 28s have become way expensive. There used to be a sizable percentage difference in price between the two models. This has narrowed considerably over the past ten years.

Now how long do you plan on keeping this target revolver? 1 month? 12 months? Probably more like several years.

The 6" nickel model 27 on the top right of my first image is also the first revolver I ever purchased new. That was in 1978, I still own it. I still shoot it. It was $245 new from the dealer. If I paid $100 more than a model 28 (which was not available in nickel) that would come to about 25 cents per month extra since the time I purchased it.

I think it was money well spent

Hopefully my entire lifetime.

Beautiful pictures, and thanks for the info so far, folks! Keep it comin'

I am not much for the barrels above 6 inches...that would be my limit. And I cannot decide between a 4 and 6 inch barrel...fate will likely decide that for me. I hope to use it for USPSA at some point, and the 4 inch would be more useful for that application...though my dad has used his 6 inch 45 colts many many times in the same matches...and bested my score

I recently picked up a 4 inch nickel M-27-2 (1979 manufacture) for $350 (not lying). I'd rate it at 90 to 95% condition. I've taken it to the range a couple of times and I love the feel of the big N-frames. It's hard to go wrong with the M-27 or M-28. Good luck with your search.

The 4 inch Model 28 is a great shooter and that's what I'd be looking for because I have always felt the 5 inch barrel has the best balanced on an N frame and the 4 inch inch matches up better then the 6 inch.

Great picture...I'm salivating.

Those were my thoughts as well...though I have to admit, if a six inch comes walking in front of me with a very good price on it I may snatch it up...

I have a friend who has many S&Ws NIB from the 70s and 80s who I may give a call, as he has mentioned selling some of them to me in the future...there's also a gun show here in January that usually has a large selection of Smiths with occasional decent prices...

If 6" is your limit, and you also like the 4", you may want to compromise on a 5" barrel. Many of us consider 5" to be the ideal length barrel for an N-Frame. Of course, being more sought-after means they often cost more.

Of the two models being discussed, only the M27 is commonly available with this barrel length. You may be able to find a good shooter-quality 5" M27 for not much more than you would pay for a 6" M28. Not to mention that any M27 you look at may have a factory-installed Target Hammer / Target Trigger.

In answer to the durability question, I don't think the M28's finish is any more durable than an M27's, it's just that the M27's is of such high quality that any wear stands out so much more. Not to mock the perfectly serviceable finish of the M28, by any means. Whichever you choose, you can't go too far wrong.

Talking 27 & 28

I have no where near the beautiful guns that "Colt SAA" has in his photo, but I do have a pre-27 with a 6.5" barrel, an M-28 with a 6" and one with a 4". I love long barrel guns and shoot most every weekend. To me, they shoot the same with a preference given to the 6 inchers. The critical thing to look for in buying a used gun is the mechanics! Timeing, enshake, cylinder side play, smooth action, are to be checked out. Notice the wear points, they can be a clue to its performance. I have bought revolvers that looked great at the buying point but performed poorly when they were loaded. I have also bought "dogs" that looked like they were draged behind a pickup on a gravel road, but performed in a superior manner. After nearly 60 years of shooting I still love'm. Hope this helps.

I have both the 4" and 6" Model 28. I definitely prefer the 4" over the 6".
I do not have the Model 27. I do, however, have a Model 25-2 (45 acp) 6" which is my most accurate revolver. I also have a Model of 1989 in 45 Colt that has a 5.5" and I agree it balances the best of my N frames.

I just got my first 28 s prefix serial num.66-67 manufacture date.It is in mint condition. I have shot her and she can sing!It is a six in but its my first S&W. I want a 4 in and a 27 now.If it was not for my friend that works at the shop I bought it at. I would not have known about it!He told me he carried the exact same pistol as a state trooper! And it was original and not to pass on it!I took his advice I owe him one now!Thank god for good friends!!

I'd go 27-2 in bbl length of your choice. The longer bbls will most likely come with a patridge front sight which will aid greatly in target shooting, over the ramp. I got my first 27 a few months ago, and love it.

I've owned both. I'd take the first one that turns up in the condition you are looking for and a price that suits you. The only difference is the 27 is purdier and costs more, conditions being equal. Prices aren't coming down on either version anytime soon.
