Default Mod 36 with adjustable sight?

Auction site known to all is offering a mod 36 3" SB with adjustable sight. I thought they were only made without. What's up with this one?
Thanks,
Ischia

There was a small group (615 or so) of Model 36-6 revolvers that were 3 inch with target sights, but I thought they were round butt. These had a matt blue finish. There may be other limited production models as well.

Hope this helps.

There are some Chief Targets with adjustable sights, but I thought they were all 2". The 36-6 is a 3" heavy full lug barrel with target sights but it is a round butt gun, and there were only 615 produced in the mid 80's. There is a stainless counter-part in the 60-4.

H Richard,

That is by far THE most beautiful model 36 I ever saw, or even expected to see. I do not dare to hope one of those got close to a plane to Europe. Enjoy it.

The 36 also had a limited run with no lug semi-heavy three inch and regular (except for the high front sight) two inch barrels. Some of the guns were numbered as the Model 50 but some were numbered Model 36 even thought they were the same guns.I know of a version of each NIB sitting in a safe in a gun shop in Anchorage but the owner will not part with them.

Yes, they showed up sporadically between 1955 and 1975:
There was a run of 14 in '55-'56 of target Chiefs. They are pre Model 36, flat latch, may have 4 screw frame.
Another 198 in '59. Model 36, 2" Sq Butt, flat latch.
1006 in '66. Model 36, 2" Sq Butt, flat latch.
568 made in '73 and stamped Mod 50, 2" Sq Butt, regular thumbpiece.
The last 213 were 3" HB no lug, Sq Butt stamped 36-1 made in '75.

All targets after that had 3" full lug barrels and rd butts starting in 1985 with the black one showed above.

I bought this one in '85. Surprisingly accurate with SWCs.

Here is a Chief's Special Target. It is a bit interesting in that it is not model marked which started in 1957 but shipped in 1961. The grips are not original. The box numbers to the gun and the "TAR" was most likely added at the factory.

Default I wasn't paying attention, 3 " 36-1 w/adj. sights

Had a family death last week so I was a bit overwhelmed with all that entails. I don't remember whether it was GB or the For Sale section on this forum as I cruise both with my morning coffee. It WAS a 3" 36-1 SB with adjusible sights. seller claimed to be an ex factory rep or salesman. It was NOT a flat latch. Beautiful condition, perhaps unfired, no box starting price was $575 with no bids. I've checked the completed part of GB with no luck. Seems a real sleeper slipped by my old very tired eyes.

All the Best,
Ischia

P.S. It WAS GB as I now remember 7 hours left on the auction when I saw the listing.

Please see my post #6 above. Yours could be one of the 14 if not stamped Mod 36!! The next 198 were in '59 and would be model stamped.
Very nice little treasure you have.

Chiefs Specials in 1955 were the then fairly "new" and cool hideout gun of the time, so probably not popular with target sights on it which were most likely slow sellers.

It probably sat in the inventory vault until '61. The next 198 made in '59 were stamped 36 but went into the vault after yours. So 1st in, last out. Yours was probably one of the last sold of those two production runs. Just my speculation.

It's good you have the box, the top design of which may help us date it as will the serial number. Which flat latch does your gun have?

Difference between 2nd and 3rd Flat latch, top view:
