Smile Model 629, 5-inch, Rest of the Story

I bought this revolver many years ago and have posted photos of it previously. It was part of a large collection of Model 629s that was displayed at a couple of S&WCA meetings in the early 90s and later broken up. The revolver had a few issues when I bought it, namely, the timing was way off and sometimes the cylinder would not lock up, and the front sight was obviously "made up" by someone and was poorly secured to the barrel (it looked nice, but wasn't funcitional). Also, the 629 letters as having been shipped with a 4-inch barrel.

I sent the revolver to Magna-Port about seven or eight years ago and they mounted the front sight that is shown in the photo. They also tuned the revolver so it locks up tight and functions flawlessly. I shoot this gun and carry it from time to time as I really like this barrel length.

A couple of weeks ago, I obtained one of the brochures that was used with one of the displays in the 90s and found out the barrel was made by S&W by cutting an 8 3/8-inch barrel to five inches and fitting it to this gun. The brochure goes on to say S&W never made a 629 with an original 5-inch barrel.

Now you know the rest of the story about one of my favorite revolvers.

Bill

Looks good. I would never spot a cut barrel as it looks right. Still wish S&W had offered more 5" guns.

Another in your fabulous collection, Doc, that S&W should have made as a regular production item. IMHO, the perfect gun using your unmatchable photographic techniques to display it.....

I'm wondering how many 5" barrels S&W could sell today that could be fitted to N frame guns in all calibers. I'll bet enough to justify the tooling and marketing.

Put in my order for 5" 29 barrels in blue and nickle, 57's in blue and nickle, 25's in both 45LC and ACP and a 629, all pinned please!!

I certainly agree the 5-inch barrel would have been a favorite in 45 Colt, 44 Magnum, and 41 Magnum calibers. Makes you wonder why the .357 Magnum (Model 27) was offered with a 5-inch barrel.
