I Want a Snub 27
I want a 2 /12" barrel Model 27, but can't find any evidence one was ever made. So I'm considering having one made out of a longer barreled 28. I need any info you have on this. Cost, recommendations, gunsmiths that do a good job, anything I didn't think of. I'll also want the gun converted to a round butt.
This 4" 28 is one of 2 candidates. It seems like a good choice because I don't think it has any collector value, and it has the trigger from heaven. The other is a 6" barrel 28-2 with a recessed cylinder that's also a nice shooter.

If you go with 3" you can use the longer ejector rod.

That's true, and something to consider. But I really like the balance of a 2 1/2" barrel, so I'll probably just accept the added expense.

You can get down to 2 5/8" while retaining the full lenght ejector rod.
Here is a model 25 that was done decades ago.

no carbon steel 2 1/2" model 27 in the factory lineup, but there is a factory 2" Scandium model 327. You do have to go for the shorter ejector rod but it is pretty cool and it is an 8 shot revolver set up for moon clips
And the Night Guards were manufacture in 2 1/2" on the 8 shot, model 327 Scandium frame

Who did that? It's about perfect, except that I'd do a 27. But I might do a 45 LC down the road.

I've seen the Scandium ones, but need the weight of a real 27 to absorb some recoil.

Austin Behlert
He passed on in 2005
This was a common style in the 1980s. Every big shop did something similar. If you call C&S they would probably do one for you.

If you like the shorter version, I'd consider cutting the 6" and retaining the 4". JMO...........And one of those in a .45 Colt..........The Gods have spoken!!

I'm starting to favor that idea, because I have 3 of the 6", and only 2 of the 4". One of them needs an overhaul.

Cornering the 28 market, I see. The 6" is fun to shoot, but the 4" is a mean looking Hondo!!

I wouldn't do it to the six inch barreled one due to it having a recessed cylinder, I think it holds more value, it sounds to me as though the four inch one would be the perfect candidate for what you want to do.

Actually, the non pinned / non-recessed 28-3 is far more scarce than the pinned and recessed 28-2.
Back in 1976 I had a .45 Colt conversion made up on a 28-2. You will have to be careful of overall cartridge length due to the 28's cylinder length. The front sight height will have to be changed if you intend to shoot heavy bullets at standard velocities. The resulting front sight looks a little ungainly.

Question: What gun do you have as a comparison with an N-frame and a 2 1/2" barrel?
I ask because I was quite "misguided" lately when I had a 629 with a short barrel which seemed to me like 2 1/2 but was 3 inches long.
The dimensions compared to a M 19 2 1/2" fooled me.

Jim Stroh, who is in the Atlanta area, would certainly be worthy of consideration. Do a search for "Alpha Precision gunsmith." I had him do a couple custom 1911s for me back in the '80s. He really specializes in revolver work now and has a fine reputation. Don't expect a quick turnaround, though. Along with that reputation comes a long waiting list. There is a price list for much of the work he does on his site.

I have one 28-2 6" that's among the last guns I'd ever get rid of. Lazy &, pinned, recessed, trigger job. Factory grips in a box somewhere, aftermarket nice wood grips on it. They just don't get much better. It's really the only 6" 28 I need.

I never would have guess the non pinned and recessed was more rare. The 6" is recessed only but not pinned. I asked in here and was told it wasn't worth anymore because of that. To me, it's the most expendable one. I'm not even sure why I bought it, because I already have my perfect 28.
I wouldn't even consider getting a 27 converted to 45 LC. If I wanted a snub 45 LC I'd cut down the one I have. Or maybe convert a 44.

Thank you, I'll try to contact him. I heard back from Cylinder and Slide. They told me they'd cut it to 3.5" and cutting to 2.5 doesn't make sense. I guess they haven't seen the pics in this thread. Their loss, I won't try to force them.

Probably thinking about one of these 629's...

These are two of the 300 1999 year issue, pre-key 300 Camfour fixed sight, 2 5/8" 629's...
The stocks are K-Frame, Round Butt, Magnas installed in a moment of whimsy just to illustrate how small these guns are.

I'm a few days late to this conversation, but if you want a round butt .357 with a ~2.5" barrel, why not consider a straight out purchase of a PC 627? This is a recently produced example of the so-called "Blood Work" gun which is the second S&W for which Clint Eastwood created insane demand.
You could just sell your chosen donor gun and cover over half the cost of the 627 right there. The out-of-pocket remainder is about what you would pay for the conversion work anyway, and there is no problem with the famed Gunsmith Backlog.
