Default Serial number lookup

I have a S&W .38 Special CTG Mod. 36-1 with serial number J614XXX. I believe it was made within a few years of 1980.

Can someone give me a more precise date of manufacture from that serial number?

Any other information that someone's books can tell me from the model and serial number would be appreciated.

Default Serial

I have had a S&W passed down to me from my wife's grandfather. The serial number from the best I can tell is 222992. Any help on age of this pistol? Thanks.

Snapshot & GTI: you'll get more info if you start your own thread. Hijacking a thread only confuses the guys that are more than willing to offer an opinion. This is a perfect example. Three similar questions shouted out at the same time. This site is the best source of S&W information on Earth. Use it properly, and you'll love it.
