Now officially addicted to big bore wheel guns...didn't see it coming.
I think I can now consider myself officially addicted to SW and Colt wheel guns. When I see a NIB 70's big bore beauty I start to drool. Never saw it coming as I really prefer to shoot semi autos. I just detail my trophies, take great pics and lock them in a safe... Must be nuts!

Since you asked -- I have never understood why anybody would buy a gun and not shoot it. It'd be like buying a hammer or saw and sticking it in a safe. The entire function of a revolver is to reliably push power in a straight line over distance -- just doesn't seem right to deny that function. Big waste of money -- but it is your money, so... I honestly hope you enjoy your hobby. Happy New Year!

Well, if one, like me, has an assortment of shooters, then you want to keep those few collectable guns in as pristine condition as possible. Look at it this way, would you take your like-new, showroom polished 1933 cadi out for drives in the winter? When you shoot a NIB collectable gun you are reducing its value every time you load up...

Count? Well my friend you have come to the right place to confess
your addiction.
But understand you are preaching to the choir.
Those of us who have battled N frameitis for years now will
be but amused at your angst.
Sorry but it is truly a case of been there, done that, and have the T shirt.
Hope you either really enjoy it, or kick the habit.
Either way ,good luck. And, it didn't happen without pictures.
Just afew in 45 Cal.

CONGRATS to you !
Nothing like the feel of fireing big bore wheel guns.
Just love the .44 Magnums.
I enjoy fireing my .50AE Desert Eagle too, but have more enjoyment fireing my Taurus .454 Rageing Bull and espically one of my S&W 500 Magnums.
Now you're off to own many more in time.
I'm one that also fires any new guns I get.
Beautiful collection of guns there Allen !

Count: You have nice point about keeping that which is pristine -- pristine. Goodness knows a lot of folks agree with you. I just cannot get my brain around that concept. If to keep something pristine, I have to render it useless, then I have no use for it -- especially if it costs a lot of money.
Where my argument is weak is in matters of art. I have paid some big bucks for paintings -- and all they are good for is accenting a room and looking at -- but that is their function. It you collect guns as works of art, then you got me -- but then we would have a disagreement on taste.

Would you take a hard to come by 1900s' $20.00 double eagle out and use it for grocery shopping ? Same difference!

Just when I was thinking I was in good shape with my "collecting", mostly for shooting, along comes a thread and Allen-frame has to post some photos with big bore Smiths. I've been thinking about large bore revolvers any way. Where do I sign up?
Blessings,
Hog

PA REB: Maybe I'm quibbling, but when a S&W factory revolver sells at auction for $7.6 million, I too will put my guns in a safe and start shooting semi-autos. So there is a big difference.
In another post in this thread I conceded that some people think of their guns as works of art, and that's fine, but they are not high art.
Recall too, the thread started by the gentleman asking for an opinion as to whether he was nuts for sticking perfectly good guns in a safe (I paraphrase). I gave one and though I disagreed with his use of firearms, I told him I was happy however he spent his own money.
This forum is for people who like S&W revolvers -- but do I need to worship them too?

But why own it in the first place if you're not gonna shoot it? A picture of it would be much cheaper. And as for as value guns aren't the greatest investment out there. You caretakers leave good deals at estate sales. I guess I'll never figure you guys out.
Off my soapbox now.

Seriously though............
Those who take the pristine examples, or rare examples and "guns-safe" them are smarter with their money than me.
I do not have any serious collectibles but I do have a few S&Ws and one Colt that are mint/factory issue. However I like to shoot them AND look at them. And if I was smart I'd lock those away and find the same models in the "shooter" category.
However, I do not have the time and money. So I will shoot the "un-shot", hopefully take care of them, and sell them for "some" profit in the future and not a lot of "profit".

That pics just a the tip of the iceburg. Allen has some others stashed away. I'd let ya chop off my little toe with no pain killers for his 3" 66 collection! My wife would behead me if I bought that many !
Do whatever you want with that baby Count. Its YOUR revolver. I shoot all of mine. Have 2 nickels, no dash 4" 57 and a 2.5" 19-3 that are pristine. I still take them out vey rarely and shoot light loads through em. Just can't stop myself.
I love .41 magnums. Am up to five and counting. Them big bores are great revovers but you have to reload to enjoy shooting the magnums IMO. Used to shoot long range silhouette matches when I was younger with my 6.5" 57 and max reloads. Great way to hone your skills for handgun hunting! Weren't no problems back then. My tolerence level has went down thanks to RA and I mainly shoot light rounds these days. Easy on the revolvers, fun to shoot and they still look great if you properly maintain them. I shoot my S&W .22's and Stevens Favorite with a 2x7 power Leupold more these days than all the others combined. Good, fun and very cheap shooting thats easy on the wallet and joints.

+1 on that as now that's a blast.
Yea this is a good place to confess as we have all been there at some time in our S&W buying career. You got to love those N frames, and L frames. The best deal going right now is a Model 28-2 with 4 inch barrel or 6 inch barrel as shooters can be bought for $400to $450 and really nice ones for $500 to $550. They are the same revolver as the Model 27 only they have a matt blue and lack the checkered steel top strap.

I have to agree with both camps to a point...in general I can't see the point of owning guns if you don't shoot them...that IS what they are for! On the other hand if you take that argument further and only look at your guns as tools then you (or I) really don't NEED more than a few revolvers (How many hammers/screwdrivers/revolvers do you need?) But since most of us clearly own multiple revolvers, often in the same caliber, there is obviously more to it than need. I own 17 357 mag revolvers and I'm happy to say I've shot 16 of them...I can't bring myself to fire my virgin NIB model 520...but I can imagine how it would function when I shoot my 4" 28-2...same gun different sights...I see nothing wrong with keeping a few safe queens.

It is going to get worse, believe me. Mine started with a 629 Classic, then came the 27-2 6" in presentation case, 28-2 6" in original box, 25-5 4", 27-3 4" and last but not least, my Christmas gift to me, a 28-2 4". Have shot them all. Hope you have good insurance to help with your addiction. Happy New Year all.

Yep, you're nuts just to lock em' away, waiting on another owner to really enjoy them. I'll tell you what...go to the range and shoot a 44 special with a big ole chunk of lead that's called a Keith bullet with about 850 to 900 fps on it and you'll find out what true big bore addiction really is. You'll find yourself stopping to pick up wheel weights! Now that's big bore addiction.

I have become addicted to .45 ACP revolvers!
Started with a Thunder Ranch 22-4. Then I got a Ruger Blackhawk. Followed up with a 625-8 that the previous own had factory tuned. Now I keep my eyes open for any .45 ACP or .44 Special revolvers. Revolvers that fire big, slow moving hunks of lead are fun!
My collection of .357 Mags haven't been seeing as much range time.

I became interested in N frames a couple of years ago and always try to buy revolvers that are in as good a condition as I can afford. I have both NIB and others that have been shot.
What started as a blue finish preference now encompasses both blue and nickel. This usually allows me to avoid the shoot or don't shoot dilema. If I buy a gun that has been shot, I'll try to find a NIB mate in the other finish.
I can't deny any longer that I am certifiably addicted.
