Help to date model 10-5 snub nose 38
Could anyone help me to date my S&W .38 special snub nose?
It is Mod 10-5 and serial number is D624610. Just curious of its year. Looked through the forum and I think it may be 1968, but I could be mis-reading something. Thanks in advance for any help.

'73-'74
Welcome to the Forum.
SCSW-3 says D510001-D659901 shipped during the 1973-1974 time frame. Your's was likely a '74 ship date.
By the way - we like pictures.

I picked this up at a show this weekend. It came with the fancy K frame Rosewood grips, which I promptly removed for one of my other, longer barreled guns.
The serial # is 2D595XX. It is Nickel even though the pics don't show it very well. I have never seen a M10 with a serial like this. I have a blue, 4" if not mistaken, M10-5 with C prefix serial #.
I too am curious about this one. The older guy at the show said he never shot it but I hear that all the time. Anyone have any thoughts on this old boy?

Candyman, Standard Catalog of S&W shows that serial numbers:
2D00001-2D80000 were shipped in 1977. Good lucking M10.

Model 10s were assigned "C" serial numbers from 1948-1967. They then went to "D" from 1968-1977. From 1977 until the start of 3-alpha, S&W used "2D" through "30D" prefixes.
Your 2D595XX was shipped in 1977.

Thank you very much for the help, here is a pic ... bad photo from a cell phone the light reflecting makes color look faded, but is not. Wood handles are hard to see in pic.

I have a model 10 with 4" heavy bbl, serial # D486472. Could you tell me the approximate year it was made or shipped? It also has "NPD 567" engraved on the left side of the frame that I assume identifies it as a former police dept gun.

Nice acquisition. Very appropriate for concealed carry or nightstand.
And if the grips are not to your liking, K-Frame, Square butt grips are easy to come by and many varieties are available.

First post. Glad to have found this site! Forgive me please if I'm in the wrong forum. I have my late father's 38 special. The number on the base of the grip is # 284022. On the side of the barrel is says 38 S&W SPECIAL CTG. Underneath the barrel is # 35120. What do I have here?

serial number is 965894. its in the bottom of the handle but my grandfather replaced the handle cover with this yellow one (he finds the original small for his grip) for perfect grip.(He has big hands).

I just picked up my dad's model 10-5 from relatives who had been keeping it for me since he passed away a few years ago. It's a special one to me as it was my dad's. I know he had it for as long as I could remember. The serial # is C742xxx, I'm guessing it's maybe 65'-66' manufacture from the other comments here? Can anyone give me a better idea? Thanks! I'm really glad I finally got the gun back, it's one of the few treasures I still have of his.
