Default Model 19-3 4" barrel Photos Added!!!

Hello All,

I am a newbie to the S&W forum and I'd like to introduce myself. I have always loved S&W revolvers and I own several but I'm a complete novice about the involved collector knowledge about these fine handguns. I just purchased a Model 19-3 with a 4" barrel...actually I put it on layaway until next week. The gun is in remarkable condition with only a slight drag line and some holster wear to the bluing on either side of the barrel at the muzzle. The gun is pinned and recessed with original grips and looks to be a great shooter. I'm curious about the specific age of this gun. I know it is from the 1970's but I'd like to narrow it down a little further than that. The SN is K9420XX. Can anyone help me with a more specific date of manufacture?

Thanks,

Kix

Question Model 19-3

I don't know if the one I bought has a target trigger, hammer or grips. How do you tell? I think I have seen target hammers...the hammer spur on these is about .5" wide, correct? What does a target trigger and a set of target grips look like?

thanks for your help!

Target stocks on a 6" 19-3 look like this. Sorry, this gun didn't come with TT or TH. But some of them did.

Kix,

You know what the target hammer looks like, .500" wide. It's the same with the trigger. A target trigger is .400" wide and the 'standard' service trigger is a narrow .265".

Default Model 19-3

Hello all,

I picked this gun up today. I was mistaken, it is actually a 4" barrel. It has target stocks but a standard trigger and hammer. The serial number indicates 1969 as the year of manufacture. Photos to follow. I'll take it out to the range this weekend to see what she'll do.

Thanks for all the great input!

Congrats on your model 19 and in my opinion the finest all around revolver S&W ever made. I have a model 19-2 4 inch with original target stocks and standard hammer and trigger. It has one of the best double action triggers I have ever used. This is typical with K frame magnums.
Good luck at the range.

Thanks Howard,

The trigger on this handgun feels incredible! Older Smiths seem to have this in common...I have a 1964 Model 10 that has a superb trigger also, very smooth in double action and just incredible in single action. This 19-3 has a similar trigger...beautifully executed. I didn't buy this fine old handgun to sit in a safe or to carry, I bought it as a home defense gun. I prefer revolvers for this purpose because they can stay loaded for years without any springs getting weak and also because of the reliability factor. The chances are that a home break in may never occur in your home or if it does, it may only happen once in your lifetime. If and when it does, I want a defensive handgun that I KNOW will work, first time, every time. I also want one that I can get so comfortable with that I can shoot it from muscle memory without so much as a glance at the sights. This takes practice but I can do that easily and have fun doing it. If I need it for home defense it will likely be dark and I will likely be nervous, or sleepy, or both. I want a weapon that will get the job done effectively and is noisy enough to scare any PITA innocent bystanders away.

OK...I stole that line from the movie "The Godfather" but it brings up a valid point. If Joe burglar is in my house and he has a friend out in the back yard his friend is likely going to beat feet away from the area if he hears this 19-3 barking a time or two.

I can't wait to shoot the old girl. My camera battery is kaputt so I will have to wait until I get a replacement to post some pictures.

Thanks for all the helpful input and nice comments. BTW...I paid $425 OTD for this 19-3...did I get my money's worth?

You absolutely got your moneys worth!

I just brought home my little sweetie of a 19-3 with a 4"bbl. I have thread going on mine in this category as well.. I absolutely LOVE how this piece handles! Sooo much lighter in weight than my 6" 686.... I paid $460 plus NY sales tax which put me up to $496 and change. Mine has a little blueing wear at the muzzle, a bit of a turn line (not terrible but there) some blueing wear on the extractor rod and a bit of a drag mark where the cylinder lock at the rear of the cylinder swings into and out of the rear of the frame.. It's a shooter, but doesn't look too shabby at all for a 40+ year old piece. I'm VERY happy with it

Default 19-3

Thanks Dooman,

The one I bought has some bluing wear on the sides of the muzzle (holster wear) and a very faint drag mark on the cylinder. Mine has the standard hammer and trigger and great target stocks. The trigger and internals on this gun look superb, like it was carried some but hardly ever shot. The timing, lock up and hinge areas are almost like new. I can't wait to shoot it on Sunday! OK Folks Here she is warts and all!! Please excuse the flash photography.

What do you guys think?

Ha Ha! Yours is in a little bit better shape than mine. Nice score!

Mine seems to have been fired a bit, but well cared for. I stripped it down tonight, cleaned and inspected it. No rust anywhere on the butt under the grips. No rust of any kind or amount and clean and lightly lubed internals under the side plate. Like I said, it certainly has been fired it's fair share, but the bore is clean and bright, and it looks like it has been very well maintained....

Very nice. I always look at the top strap above the forcing cone to see if the gun has been shot much. The last two I bought were pristine.

My 19-3 I bought NIB. Cost a bit, but all the wear is my wear. I've got a few thousand light .38 loads and a few regular .357 loads through it now.
