Default S&W Model 19-3 2.5" Question UPDATE!!!!!

Well Christmas came a little late for me, I stumbled into this "MINT" one owner, once fired, never holstered S&W Model 19-3 Serial # 8K87XXX for a price that proved I was on Santas very very very good list.

My question is do any of my fellow forum members own one in the same serial number range (1975 production) that also has the red ramp front sight? I have seen some with and some without and was just curious.

Thanks 1 old 0311, thats some Model 19 collection you have, The SCSW 3rd Edition Page 186 shows a variation of the Model 19 produced in 1965 for the Office of Naval intelligence with 4" Barrel, Roundbutt, Service trigger, Standard hammer, red ramp front sight with white outline rear sight. So I am very interested to find out if anyone else has a 2.5" 19-3 with a RR front.

Thanks JCS&W, the action on this gun is amazing as it looks.

MacA, the information on your 19 is much appreciated as I am trying to figure out if the RR was a optional feature. I know one of our resident model 19 experts will see the thread sooner or later.

BigBoku, does yours have the white outline rear also?

They certainly didn't seem to be too common but I have seen more than a few. 6K612xx has the RR/WO.

By the early '60s at least, most likely earlier, they showed up in the catalog as an option.

When they started using the six digit product codes in 1984, there was one for a 2.5" 19 w/ RR/WO; 100703 (blue) and 100715 (nickel).

It's 1972 (3K101xx) but I have a Model 19 with a red insert and white outline rear sight blade.

Thanks CHUD333, I think it was being extra good and lucky, long story short the gun came from the original owner, she purchased the gun brand new as a home defense weapon, she fired it once and it has sat in a safe for the last 36 years!!!!!! She did not have the box or papers and did not want to renew her pistol license so I scored the gun for 275.00!!!!!

Thankyou MacA for pointing me in the right direction and Thankyou snw19_357 for your reply as you come highly recommended on the subject of all things model 19. The SWSC 3rd edition page 186 lists a variation of the Model 19 produced in 1965 for the Office of Naval intelligence with 4" Barrel, Roundbutt, Service trigger, Standard hammer, red ramp front sight with white outline rear sight. The variant I have is a 2.5" RR front sight "without" the white outline rear sight. Teezer posted a picture of his 19-3 2.5" serial # 10KXXXX with a RR front sight, I am sending him a PM to see if it has the white outline rear sight.

Again Thankyou for your input as it is very much appreciated.

I think you and I spoke before about this pistol in the hands of one of my friends. He's deployed at the moment, but I was pretty sure his front sight was yellow, and he assures me it is a red ramp. Otherwise, his is exactly as you describe. The only problem is that his grips are "wrong" in every way. It came to him with Pachmayr compac RUGER SPEED SIX grips on it. They "fit" and it functioned fine. I provided him a set of factory round butt combat grips as a gift for his 30th birthday, and I think he's since gotten something else on there, and moved the combats to another revolver. It's a very interesting piece, for sure.

Squid, I do remember and that serial number indicates 1965 production and the SCSW states 200 round butt 4" models were made for the Naval Investigative Service and had a "Yellow" front ramp sight insert.

Louisiana Joe, Those grips look sharp on that model 19-5 and Thankyou for the additional info.

Mike our model 19-3's are veru closely related mine is 8K87XXX!!!!!

Here are some better pics (I am no photographer) Target Hammer, Serrated Trigger and best pictures I could get of the Rear sight and Red ramp front sight.

Thanks Opaul, Those grips are "No Bark" Elk Stags made by our very own forum member Patrick Grashorn, his work is top notch and he is a gentleman to deal with. If you do a forum search for Executioner (Patricks Screenname) you will find alot of awesome threads on his work here is one to start with!!!!!!!!!

well, i'll ask the question, were red ramp and white rear sight always used together from the factory ??

i realize that you could buy them separate, but the $3 cost for the blade seems like a no brainer from S&W when combined with the red ramp

when i was collecting, when these were new in the 70's, it was somewhat of a status thing to have. you didn't see many with this option on k frames on the shelves either

don't think i ever saw the red ramp without the white outline rear

No. I have seen several red ramp fronts with plain black rear. I have a 19-4 with that, and I used to have a 29-2 with the ramp but plain black rear.

S&W was so ecclectic in design configurations mainly due to the cost saving practice of using excess/left over parts that were in inventory. For this reason I am tapping into our knowledge base for information to see whats out there. When I get a few extra bucks, I am going to have this little beauty lettered, But for know I am relying on the forum members expertise.

Thanks Squid, I actually like the sight picture of the plain black rear sight a RR front. Did you ever find out for sure if your buddies had the Yello ramp front sight?

No. He's in A-stan for the next several months. His lovely wife is not gun-person enough to open the safe and let me look at it.

I always do. We have been in the sandbox together before, and whenever one of us comes back, the other has good Kentucky Bourbon waiting.

Sorry, I figured that with the thread title being what it is it would be sort of a given. Yes, it is a 2 1/2 inch barrel. I seem to remember a thread here at the forum a few years back where people were showing their 2 1/2 inch barrel Model 19s and there was quite a few 2 1/2 inch 19-3s that had the TT, TS, RR and WO combination, I wonder if S&W simply had a surplus of the Target Triggers and Target Hammers on hand.

Oh, and I forgot to mention, my 19-3 also has the trigger stop.

This is an interesting conversation and thread.
My opinion and observations and anyone that knows me knows I have extreme Combat Magnum tunnel vision so… Also, nothing S&W can be stated as fact.

Yes, and no. In 1975 when the stainless sights were replaced on the Model 66, they came standard with a red ramp front sight and a plain blue rear sight blade. The white outline rear was an optional upgrade, if you will.
But, for a Model 19, if you got one with a red ramp front sight, it also had the white outline rear. They came standard with the plain blued front and rear sights, the RR/WO were an optional upgrade.
I would guess that this would also be seen in the other K-frames with target sights.

When the Model 29 (and 57 for example) were introduced, the came standard with a RR and WO, a TT and TH. Even in the 6” and 8-3/8” versions, they had a RR and WO. You could however get them with a Patridge front sight but then they had a plain blue rear sight blade.

I responded via PM, but this is a point maybe better made here:
Wouldn't it be somewhat likely that these revolvers got a front sight replacement when the RR became readily available? That would explain the RR/Blue rear combos I have seen. I know, the rear sight is more readily/easily changed, but I think a shooter is going to change out his front sight first.

Thats a very good possibility as the serial number dates my 19-3 to 1975 which SNW19_357 posted was when the RR became standard on the Model 66 with the solid Blue Rear sight!!!!!!!!!!!

Here are a couple. You can see the trigger stop inside the trigger guard, behind the trigger.

And a picture of the recessed cylinder goodness.

I'll have to try to get a better photo from the side, I have trouble getting good photos of nickled firearms.

I used to really dislike nickled handguns, they were too "pimp daddy" for me, but I've changed the way I feel about them over the years. The same can be said for grip adapters, I disliked them even more than nickle finishes, that changed just a couple of years ago and, as a matter of fact I was really surprised the first time I fired this Model 19 with them on. Today I like the old school aspect of them and I take my hat off to the man who first invented them.

My nickle 19-3 2 1/2", serial # K953xxx, has a blued rear sight, no white outline, and a nickle front ramp sight, no insert. Mine was made in 1972.

I have always liked grip adapters as the combo of S&W Magna Grips coupled with a Tyler T adapter just fits my hand perfectly. In regards to the Nickled guns, I have owned a few over the years but was never a big fan. However your model 19 has struck a chord and just may be my next purchase............

Thanks Stevieboy, post a picture of that nickel beauty if you dont mind, the RR and WO did not become standard production to 1975.
