Is there a web site or source for checking serial numbers/date of manufacture?

No killswitch917 there is not. Most on this site have the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson and it lists the approximate shipping dates of serial numbers. You can e-mail S&W and they will get back to you on the shipping date. The only way to find the exact date is to write S&W, pay $50, and they will send you a letter stating exactly when your Smith was shipped and to whom. Most find it cheaper to buy the book and just make do with the approximate date. Plus, the book has a tremendeous amount of information on all the S&W weapons.
We love pics here on this site and a M15-3 is something we would like to see. Post some pics!

This might help. Make sure you maximize the window and scroll all the way through it. Believe me it took me a while to find it. I now have it on my favorites bar.

Thank you very much for sharing the link sir! Just bought an unfired 2" 15-3. ANIB and it has the best finish I've seen on a S&W in a long time. I usually shoot all of my guns but am having a hard time pulling the trigger on this one. Pics coming this weekend wx permitting. Thought about carrying it and bought a new Lobo pancake for it. Ain't gonna happen. Going to slap a set of the Excutioners Stags and a Tyler on it to dress it up.

What a coincidence I just bought a 96-98% 15-3 with a 2" barrel and I'm going to shoot the heck out of it. If it was unfired I'd stick it in the safe and find another. These revolvers are just too nice not to shoot. Got a DeSantis thumb break holster on the way and put a BK grip on it. Old school CCW.
One of the last 15-3s, made in 1977.

New to me 15-3...help
Gentlemen, I just acquired a 15-3 with four inch barrel. I looked on the link above to find my year of manufacture and it wasn't there. The SN is 6K859xx. It appears the SN's ended at 6K58xxx before they go to 7Kxxxxx. What gives do you think? It is pretty good condition except some holster wear on the end of the barrel and on the bottom of the trigger guard. So my guess is it is 1974ish and might be worth $500. Am I close fellas? Thanks. One thing forgot to mention was the dymond grip. I thought that was pre '68. May not be original I guess.

I checked the grip numbers and they didn't match. 757238 are on the grips. I'm guessing the gun they came on was k757238 circa 1967??

OK, my turn. My wife acquired this Model 15-3, 2" barrel, serial number 8K28054, not the original grips I think (see pics). Approximate manufacture date and value if I were to sell it would be appreciated.

Thanks I guess I could have followed the trail to that. Do you have any idea on what it is worth? I am thinking about selling it to purchase an M&P 9mm. It shoots straight and all of that but I prefer the M&P line.

I just acquired a S&W Model 15-3 with the serial #K279XX. I would be grateful to find out the year of manufacture. Thank you very much, Charles.

Yeah.
There is a digit missing from that number or else it is not a Model 15-3!
Check your number again, SouthernYankee!

Here are all the #'s I found on the weapon. Model 15-3 on the frame when the cylinder is opened. The next number is on the crane, it is 78170 E17. The next number is on the frame where the grip panels attach, and that number is 6K279XX. The weapon is nickel & has a 2" barrel. I hope this helps, and I do thank everyone for their knowledge and time.

Yes. The 6 in front of the K is significant. Your Combat Masterpiece dates from 1974.

I thought I would add my 15-3 in 38 S&W to the list. I have the original box, wrapping paper, instruction manual and cleaning tool.
I paid $300 for the lot. Serial number 1K43XXX places it around 1971 or so. Not too bad for a 40 something year old!
It is hard to believe, but I do not think this gun has been fired. There is barely a ring on the cylinder. If it has, there cannot be many rounds down the barrel.
I bought a die set and frankly plan to shoot it at least once, or twice or...
