It's a Model 10, the most produced gun of any Smith and Wessons and has been made continuously since about 1908. Pobably used by more law enforcement agencys than any other gun in it's time.

Since you couldn't tell what it was, I presume it isn't stamped Mod 10 on the frame in the yoke which means it pre dates 1957. And since it's a 4 screw it post dates 1955, so that will give you an idea of when it was made.

The model 10 will fire 38 special and 38 special+P, as for value, around my area they go for $300 to $400.

I associate that hammer profile with later four-screw production, so in a possible range of 1957-1961, I'd guess not earlier than 1959 or 1960.

If you want to give us a partial serial number with x's for the last two or three digits (C456xxx, for example), we can probably give you the year.

That's a temporary assembly number. We need the serial number from the butt of the gun. You will probably have to remove the rubber grips to see it.

Now, the last 3 digit will tell you even closer.

From the Std Catalog of S&W

C405,019 – C429,740…..1958 – 59
C429,741 – C474,148…….1960

In my opinion, Model 10's have defended more people than any other handgun in history.

They are the cornerstone of revolvers and as reliable as one too!

Value has been pinned down. For exact sales figures you can look for your gun on Gunbroker.com under 'completed auctions'. By the way, since your gun is not stamped Mod 10, it's officially identified by the factory as the .38 Military and Police and by collectors as the Pre model 10.

Also you may or may not know that guns weren't produced or shipped in numerical order. Therefore since stamping with "Model 10" began circa 1957, it's likely yours was produced earlier than the serial number appears to indicate.
