Could someone help me with pricing a late 1964 to early 65 S&W model 29-2 6.5 in barrel. 95-98% only slight holster wear. The gentleman interested in trading with has had it appraised, I would like to verify the value.

Well to make it more tempting the gun is a late 1964-Early 65 build date I will include to pics with New Nos factory target grips and custom Houge wood grips also habeas a rubber Houge and 2 boxes of shells. It is a 6.5 inch barrel pinned and recessed target trigger target hammer red ramp white outline sites.

A 6 1/2" 95% - 98% 29-2 should go for $750 - $850+. Obviously a 98% condition gun with box, tools, and paperwork would be on the higher end. Condition is always subjective so make your own decision, and check out all the details. Some of the old 29's got a little loose from a steady diet of magnums.

Does the above comment mean the original grips are not included? A few photos posted here would also help along with an asking price. I would also want to see the serial number to be sure its a "S" series. Original box, cleaning kit, etc.? Also, if it is a "little loose", that could be fixed pretty easily.

No box I'm waiting on the serial number. I apologize for the supersize photos, but I don't know how to resize them on my phone. He said the dealer appraised it at $800 plus. He is looking to trade with me for a 1911 that I have listed for $775 he wants an even trade.

Both stocks are included. Are the ones in the picture original? I am a complete newbie to S&W. Here I just picked my first and I'm considering a second one.

I don't think either set of stocks is original. The grips in the 1st and 3rd photo are close, but I don't believe the left grip would have the cutout for the speedloader if the gun is as old as you were told.

The stocks are not original. If you sell both sets that come with it you may be able to get some period correct stocks for it. I wouldn't pay more than $700.

The correct grips could cost around $150 if they are N frame target grips with the diamond and they are hard to find.....

The 29-2 looks nice, but may be a little over priced. If it truly shipped in 1964 or 65, it would have "oversize target stocks made of beautifully figured Goncalo alves wood"", commonly called "coke" grips. A nice set of original coke grips will cost $300 to $450. Also, a 29-2 from that period would have shipped in a "clamshell" case which usually costs $150 to $300 plus an additional $30 to $50 for the period correct tools. If the gun has a later ship date of 1967 or later, the stocks would be diamond target stocks which usually run $125 to $200. You can read more about the stocks in Bill Cross' commentary below. If you really wanted the gun, and there are no marks under the grips to indicate a trip back to the factory for a refinish or rework, I would offer your 1911 for the 29-2 plus $75, making the 29-2 worth about $700. You can then sell the stocks that come with the gun the recover $50 to 75. Then you can look into getting the proper stocks.

I definitely want it, I think I w can make it work with him. I'm asking more for my 1911 than I have in it so I should be covered. This is a piece I plan to keep for a long time. I can work on getting the correct grips. He has the cleaning rod. I've wanted one of these since I first saw dirty Harry.

That about seals the deal then. You wanting it and liking it is all that matters. Harry would be proud !

Its a silly reason to want a gun, but I dont care . I guess its not tgat silly i wanted a 44mag and almost bought a ruger single six. Thanks everyone for your help. I really just didn't want to get raked over hot coals because I really want a particular firearm. I sincerely appreciate all the feedback.

Unfortunately or fortunately I think I will need to start reloading before long.

Now to figure which classic 357mag I want.

sounds to me like a fair trade though, assuming the revolver is mechanically sound and the bore is clean.

Actually, for an early 29, the correct stocks would be the elusive "Coke Bottle" Pattern. So called for their shape...







... and $150 wouldn't get you one panel. $350 and up unless you get lucky or someone takes pity on you. A pair in commensurate condition could bring near $500 on the open, frenzied E-Bay market...

what kind of marks under the grips would there be if it was returned back to the factory for re bluing or other work ?
