Default New (old) 27-2 nickel . 5" 'FHP 1605' , 1975.

I spoke to a retired l.e.o. the other day about a model 27 he has and considered
selling. I was kind and patient with him and disseminated a lot of
information in a short period of time.
Yesterday he said he was keeping this gun. Today he e mailed me and said he would sell it to me.
We met locally and I bought it.

I like it. It will make a fantastic shooter.

He bought it out of the shotgun news 20 years ago from
J&G sales. He has had it ever since.

I got it with rubber grips that he put on it for shooting long ago.
I put on the old pair of Fuzzy Farrant stocks as they just seem to fit
considering the law enforcement connection.

It's in very good shape considering it is 36 years old and an old
law enforcement turn in.

Glad they didn't destroy this one.

Be Cool

Congrats Allen! Good save on a fantastic gun. I'm sure you made him feel that you'd be a good care-taker for the 27 or he wouldn't have agreed to sell.

If you haven't already, you should press him for more info on the gun. Has he ever had to use it in the line of duty, etc? Good guns deserve good stories to go with them.

Way to go....
Craig.

That must have been one "high class" police department. Nice 27.

This is #1581. All of these (500) were in a single shipment made 3/13/75 to the Dept. of Public Safety in Tallahassee for the Florida Highway Patrol. They carry FHP and a rack number on the left frame below the cylinder added after they left S&W.

I have seen one for sale on GunBroker about 9 years ago and there are two more owned by members on this forum.

I like the known and sometimes unknow history of these revolvers. What a story some of them could tell.
Great revolver Allen-frame and I'm sure that gun would not have been sold to just 'anybody'.

That is a very nice LEO mod 27. We used to vacation there most summers when I was growing up. I remember the black and yellow cruisers and it seems like they carried their 27's in a cross-draw flap holster. Starting with the registered magnums in 1937 the Mississippi Highway Patrol carried blued 5" RM's, pre 27's and 27's until sometime in the early to mid 80's. Then they used 66's followed by 686's until the bottom feeders were issued.

As far as I know, mine is not a former LEO gun. It's 10 years older than your and shoots straight and steady. The only thing I would ever trade it for was a Model 27 with a 3.5" barrel.

At some point the FHP also used nickel 5" Colt Troopers (special order as the 5" barrel was not a catalog item) and S&W Model 28-2s also in nickel and with 5" barrels and these were also special order for both finish and barrel length.

I am jealous to an embarrassing extent. I do plan to get a 5" nickel 27-2, and dread thinking of the wait and the cost.

I have #1278. Bought at a Phoenix gun show last year. Sorry no history with mine, however it's in extremely nice shape for an ex-LEO gun.

Sounds like a plan. My best friend is a retired FHP homicide investigator, and could give us plenty of history of the revolvers. Let us know if you ever get to Florida. Bill

Great purchase! Nice to see a weapon from "the good old days" of the Patrol. If only these fine pieces of history could talk.

Congrats again Allen!!!! You're a S&W magnet. Need to move back down there for all of them good deals. Grabbed a few nice ones at the Tampa GS and at the St. Pete GS years ago.

Bildozer, welcome back to the forums after a long hiatus.

Instead of tacking this onto an old thread, why not start yourself a new one and ask away about your FHP gun. That way you might get more people to read the thread and give you information. Also, helpful information would be the serial number of the gun, which you can find in the yoke cut and on the bottom of the frame under the grips. With the serial number, we can give you an approximate year of shipping from the factory. You can replace the last 2 or 3 numbers with X's if you feel uncomfortable about posting the whole serial number on the internet.

BTW, nice looking 5" you got there. My first pistol I ever bought back in 1974 was a nickel 5" 27-2 and I still have it.

Correction to my earlier post. They shipped in 1977 not 75 and there are apparently 8-10 forum members who have one. I reviewed my letter and the FHP was stamped by S&W and the agency added the numerals.

A little late to this party, but better late than never. I just picked up FHP 1582. Glad to be a member of the FHP 27 clan. Now the quest to find some grips to compliment its elegance.

Mine is 1581. BTW the FHP was stamped by factory and number added by agency.
