Default The most accurate revolver you ever fired ???

The most accurate center fire revolver that I have ever fired was a S&W model 27-2 with the 8-3/8" barrel. The most accurate rimfire revolver that I have ever fired was an old 4-screw S&W model 17 no dash (K-22) with a 6" barrel. What was the most accurate center fire and rimfire revolvers you guys have ever fired ?

S&W 25-2 and a S&W 29-2 that was purchased as a 4", then rebarreled in my buddy's garage, (doing everything the wrong way like using a hammer handle through the frame opening to remove the old barrel and put on the new barrel), with a 8 3/8" barrel he bought from J&G back in 1976. I bought the gun from him in 1979 and it is the most accurate revolver I have ever shot.

Sadly, every handgun I fire seems to be inherently inaccurate.

That said, I was pleasantly surprised by my 8-3/8" Model 57, which gave me tighter 25-yard groups than I had ever seen from any centerfire revolver the very first time I fired it.

In general, I do well with N-frame .38s, so any .38-44 Outdoorsman, either prewar or postwar, has been a good performer for me.

In rimfire revolvers, a Pre-18 gave me tighter groups out of four inches than I had ever achieved from a six-inch barrel on any Pre-17.

Afterthought: I should add that I do pretty well (and am getting better) with an 8-shot 627-5 PC revolver with a 2-5/8" barrel. This "Blood Work" gun gives me better accuracy than a lot of my longer-barreled revolvers.

I'm purty sure it was my ol' 8 3/8" 29-2 that I used for IHMSA...
A 220 grain Sierra match bullet over a big dollup of 2400 (too much to tell here).

Ten shots, I could cover with one hand on the Turkey target one time. (150m)
Using one chamber...I think I single-handedly caused that rule change to come about.

Even when loading it all the way around, she'd shoot 10" groups on the Rams if I did my part. (200m)

Of course all that was layin down in the Creedmore position.

Su Amigo,
Dave

A 4" 19-4 in the 79K prefix series. Belonged to a shooting buddy. It was truly a "1 inch gun".

I was so impressed I went a found myself one. It is just about as accurate.

Second place would be my PC 586-5 L-comp. A fine example of what the Performance Center was capable of with a revolver. Regards 18DAI

I am by no means a great shot with a handgun. My two range buddies on the other hand could probably shoot the wings off a fly at 15 yards with any revolver they own.I usually hear"What's the matter old man, forget your seeing eye dog?"Then I bought a really used sherrif's dept.686-1 in 4 inch. The new comments were"You been practicing without us?"Can't shoot anything else I own like that old 686.Can't figure out why but really don't care,we always have a good time.As far as .22 cal goes my dad's old H&R 922 is really a great shooter. My 11 year old grandson is very impressive with it.

For me, it is a toss-up between my 4-screw model 1955 and my target model triple lock. Both are excellent guns and just seem to "fit" me.

I'll play....... My 1980 Mod 25-5 with a 4" bbl. A tackdriver. For rimfire, believe it or not, I've never shot a revolver, only autos. That being said my Ruger MK111 is VERY accurate.

Over the years I've fired a lot of accurate revolvers. One of my main goals as a reloader was testing and developing accurate loads for my guns. I had a 6 inch model 19-3(IIRC) that was consistantly accurate with a bunch of different stuff. Same for a couple of model 27's and a 28. Generally speaking it was much tougher to develope revolver loads that were much more accurate than factory ammo, out to 50 yards. Although it's tougher to beat factory centerfire rifle now, back in the days it was a lot easier.

Anyway, back to the answer. The most accurate revolver I have ever owned or fired is a 44 special that I purchased from a forum member from Tenn. It is a former GA State Patrol model 28-2 that was converted to 44 special by an unknown source. It has what appears to be a model 1950 6 inch blue bbl and a re-chambered cylinder. It was evidentaly well worn as a patrol gun and it has been refinished at some time and has become less than pristine once again. But don't judge a book by it's cover because this baby will shoot! Except for cosmetics it is in great mechanical shape. I've made a believer out of more than one that doubted it's exceptional accuracy. I've been offered a great deal more than I paid for it, but this gun ain't going nowhere! I've learned my lesson, I hope. No more sellers remorse for me.

I have a 27-2 with an 8 5/8" bbl as well as a 6.5" Model 29 Classic DX that are likely the top two. I'd have to find a Ransom Rest and experiment with loads to know for sure...

8 3/8 629-4 DX, 2nd model HE 44spl converted to target, also a custom 5" 629-2......or any of my Dan Wessons. They all make one hole targets at 20 yards....

Don't even get me started on my Freedom Arms....I just kept it to double actions.

Default Colt Python

A Colt Python. Six inch blued made in 1975, bought new in 1975. I have used it in PPC competition for over 20 years. Shooting at 7 yards and 25 yards.
Has a "Deluxe action job" done by the late Austin Behlert from Behlert Precision.
Patridge front sight & Elliason rear sight.

If you think a Python is smooth. This one is the ultimate in smooth.

Sorry S&W guys, most accurate of the ones I've owned is a scoped 9 1/2" barreled 44 Mag Ruger SRH. Off sandbags @ 25 yds, five rounds makes about a 50 caliber hole.

I've got a .45 Colt 5" 25-7 that very accurate, same for a PC 625 also in .45 Colt. With handloads and a .453" Keith SWC both will do 2" at 50 yds with irons and my old eyes on the sights.

But have to say...I've got a Freedom Arms M-83, a dual cyl gun .45 Colt/.454 Cas a 6" ported gun that has given me some very small groups out to 100 yds. A few too small to post for fear of getting ridiculed.

Have found several standard old M-57's and 657's to be great shooters too.

Me too. Mine is an extremely early first year model. It's so accurate it's scary. Don't get me wrong, I'm an S&W man through and through.

Unfortunately the most accurate revolver I ever shot isn't a S&W. It was a Dan Wesson model 15-2VH with a 6" barrel in .357 Magnum. Fantastic accuracy out of that thing. My first handgun too. Sady sold it long ago. One of the many you regret selling.

Most accurate for me was M13 3". First time I shot it punched four holes in the target at 25 feet. Thought I had missed twice. Got to looking at onr of the holes and it looked a bit large. Dug the bullets out of the tree behind that hole, two were fused together and the third was off just enough that it didn't stick. I still have those two wad cutter bullets somewhere either here or in my other house. I'll look and if I find them I'll take a pic and post it. Unfortunately I sold the M13 long ago when I was young and dumb.

My best grouping revolver has always been my Dan Wesson .357 w/6" barrel.

However, and it's a big however...

I shot a Silhouette match way back when my eyes resided in a much younger body, and there was a weekend when I shot my nickel Model 29 w/8-3/8" barrel.
The pistol was a box-stock example of a standard Model 29 that came with a presentation case.

I sighted it in and did well on the chickens, turkey's and pigs and got used to how it shot.
I had sighted it in on a 50 yard range, and then memorized the bullet-drop chart so that I could do some Kentucky sighting on the various distances without messing with the sight.

Anyway, and the reason I have to include my 29 as an "Honorable Mention" in this thread is that I knocked down three of the five rams on the first rack and found my sweet spot for my Kentucky holdover, and then knocked down all five of the second rack of five rams.
For those not aware of how Silhouette works, those life size rams were at a distance of 200 meters (656 feet), and it doesn't count unless you knock them all down.

I wasn't looking behind me while shooting, but when I knocked over the fifth of the second rack of rams, I was startled by the applause behind me from a group of guys who were wondering what the hell I was shooting.
I think I sold several Model 29's for S&W that day when I told the guys that it was just a stock 29 with the original sights and grips, all like it came right out of the box.

So that's the story of how a simple Model 29 can work some magic, if asked, all the way out to 200 meters.

I have a few K frames in .32 long and .32 magnum, and tend to shoot them better than my other centerfire revolvers because of the low recoil. This 6" 16-4 can produce some pretty decent groups at 15 yards with .32 long wadcutters when I do my part.

In the rimfire department this old K-22 does alright at the 15 yard mark, too. (Anybody startin' to see a pattern develop with that "15 yard" deal? Probably because past that distance the target starts to look verrrrry fuzzzzy these days...)

I had a four-inch 686 back in my "Good Eyeball" days that I tried dozens of loads in, and finally found one that shot just under an inch at 25 yards, better than anything I'd ever shot previously. I thought it was a fluke, but it would do it anytime I used that load and held my jaw just right.

A few years later a fireman I worked with bought a Dan Wesson with a 6" barrel, and asked me to work up a good deer-hunting load for him. Load #6 used a dollop of H-110 and a Hornady 158 JHP (Pre XTP) and I coaxed a group out of it that measured .501" for six shots at 25 yards. I wish I still had the target, I let the fireman keep it. He still has the gun!

My best centerfire has probably been a 6" 686-2. I guess I'm still hunting for a tack driver rim fire...My 6" model 17 and 4" model 63 are both good but I wouldn't say great...probably will get a 617 one of these days.

This is a tough one. I have a number of good revolvers, all of which are more accurate than I am, and any one of which might be more "accurate" on any given day, depending, of course, on how I'm doing. :-)

Back about 1995 I bought a new S&W F-Comp, and it is one of the most accurate revolvers I've ever fired. I will never part with it...

My single-action 6" K-38 is very nice as well, as is my 5" 625.

But I think the single most inherently accurate revolver I've ever fired is my 4" Python, which I bought from NFrameFred on here...it is just flat-out wonderful, very accurate, and with that great Colt trigger to boot.

This is a neat thread...thanks for starting it! :-)

Dan Wesson 15 Vent Heavy 8" with .357 loads. Accuracy was tops, but I never made it through an IHMSA season without something in the action giving up. The last time it came back from the factory (after a repair) I sold it.

I have 8 S&W revolvers that Pistolsmith Teddy Jacobson has worked and one of the things
he did on all 8 was to re-cut the crowns. Every one is extremely accurate but 2 stand out
among the bunch, a M36-2 & M64-1. If I had to choose just one, the M64 would get the nod.

It wouldn't be fair not to give the Model 36 it's due, so here it is.

[QUOTE=DCWilson;136338527]Sadly, every handgun I fire seems to be inherently inaccurate.

Well at least one of us is honest!

Default Most Accurate

Two stand out for me: My 625-5 45 Colt with the right hand load is amazingly accurate. I also have fired a snubbie model 66 which was a true tack driver.

It's interesting how many 45 Colts are mentioned in this thread. Due to the case capacity it's not usually considered as accurate as the 45 acp.

Most all of my revolvers are more accurate than I am. The most accurate I have been was with a Dan Wesson 15 However the one that I find "easiest" to be accurate with is my 38/44 outdoorsman, with moderate-power lead SWC.

Just about all of my S&Ws. However my 1967 19-2 stands out. My son wants to steal it. Several 28s and 27s shoot excellently also. Among my big bores my 629, 657 and 57 Mountain gun are also great shooters. One of the surprises was how accurate my 13-3 3-inch shot. almost as accurate as my longer barreled N frames. Model 36 2 inch, close range only.

This is my champ however!

The most accurate service/carry revolver I have every fired was my firends 3.5 inch early model 27 that was worked on by Clark's years ago . 125 grain MED.VEL 357 magnum would hold a ten ring at 25 yards with me shooting the gun DA.

The most accurate target field gun I have ever shot was a stock model 57 six inch (action by Bill Davis SAC.Ca.)

With premium factory loads I was able to engage B-27 police std target out to 100 yards firing standing, DA.

Thr revolver that I can shoot most accurately (and makes me look like I know what I'm doing) is my early post-war K-22. When i take non-shooters out to the range for the first time, I have them shoot the K-22. It is discouraging to be unable to hit the target, but the K-22 is so easy to shoot well that non-shooters quickly develop confidence, and they realize that recreational shooting is fun and something they want to do. My K-22 has turned a lot of people onto the shooting sports.

Centerfire revolver; I can't decide between Models 14, 27, 586, 686, or 696. The 696 is my favorite and the one I shoot the most, but they are all supremely accurate. My father was a Smith & Wesson man, and I guess Smith & Wesson is in my blood.

The most accurate revolver I have ever fired would have to be my S&W Model 1955, ...45 auto. It has the old type W mainspring and the most wonderful trigger I have ever seen in a revolver. Second best, a Colt Python with a six inch barrel.

I just started shooting revolvers last July, so there are not a whole lot of data points. But too date, my most accurate revolver is my S&W Model 17-3. The most accurate centerfire is my Model 14. Those guns with barrels - 6" & 8 3/8" respectfully are shot single action. The revolver that I shoot best double action is my Model 10-6 heavy barrel 4", but at closer range.

Dan Wesson .357 with a 15" barrel, followed by a Dan Wesson .44 magnum with a 10" barrel. S&W 17with 8 3/8 and a S&W14-4 8 3/8 close behind..all 4 guns are capable of better shooting than the shooter...me

.41 Magnum, 5.5" barrel.

2nd place would have to be the 6" Security Six.

The revolver that was my most accurate is one that I no longer own:a 7.5 inch .357 Redhawk. When I had good eyes the Redhawk would shoot 1 to 2 inch groups at 100 yards as long as I used reloads set for the gun!

That is a hard question for me to answer, but here are some Random Thoughts.

When I first started shooting Police Combat, I bought a S&W 6" Mod 14 and had a Bomar Rib Installed. I shot this gun for a year or two, and I also shot several Custom Bull Barreled revolvers made by the best custom revolver Smiths of the day. I even shot some to the best shooters custom guns.

I have NEVER shot a 38 Special PPC gun at 50 yards that shot as good as my factory Mod 14...

Also I bought a S&W 2 1/2" Mod 19 for the Snub Nosed Matches.

Again I must have got lucky for out to 25 yards this gun is a near one holer.

It is amazing.
