Quick price check on 28-2
I pastor three small churches... leading services at two churches each Sunday morning and then at one church on Sunday evening. This morning I will likely be able to get home by about 12:30... and if possible have the car gassed and be in the road by 1 p.m. I have to be back at the church by 5 p.m. It takes about 3 hours round trip to go to and from the gunshow. Yesterday when I was not in a position to do anything about it, I saw a very nice 4" 28-2 on a table at $600 OTD. It is in very excellent condition... no sign it has ever been in a holster. No box, etc., just the revolver. I am thinking of trading one of my 6" 28-2's for it. What is a "rational" price for a 4" 28-2 w/o box, etc.? I will check back in before I hit the road. Thanks sincerely. brucev.

I would gladly do the trade as long as there was no boot from me. Pricewise his gun is about $100 too high.

Yesterday at a GS in upstate SC, 28's were priced at (GASP!) $600-$800. At those prices I didn't see any leaping off the tables. I think the current prices on these are nuts!
I'd only trade even............Good Luck!

I pretty much agree with everyone else 100 over priced
I do find the 4" a bit more desirable and might give 50 plus the swap

I pretty much agree with everybody that it's at least $100 overpriced. And I don't want to rain on your parade, but I'd be surprised if a dealer would agree to a straight up trade for a 6" model. They don't seem to be as popular, so it might not be as easy for him to re-sell, at least not at that price. If it were me I'd go there with cash in hand and make an offer. Start at $500, knowing you'll go to $550. Yeah, I know, it's still a bit too much, but in a few years you'll still have the Highway Patrolman. I doubt you'll still have the $550.
Let us know how it turns out, Pastor. God is on your side. (And I like the fact you still have Sunday night services, God REALLY likes that). I was raised Baptist and remember those days fondly.
Now excuse me, gotta get my suit on for church.

Dittos with P&R Fan. I would round up some cash and see how it goes. Side note I saw a clean 4'' 28-2 at LGS yesterday for $799.....yikes Glad I found a clean one a year ago for 550.

It's been a long day. At the first service, it was 37 outside and 44 inside... at the electric heater. Ten feet away... it was probably 37... maybe 38. At the next church the heater had been turned on last night set for 70. This morning at 9 a.m. it was only 57 in the sanctuary. However, by the time I got back for the second service, it was a balmy 68. As soon as I locked up, I grabbed a piece of pecan pie and a cup of coffee and headed for the gunshow. 70 miles later I was there! And that cute little 4" 28 was still there. And... that nice dealer and I had a chat. I traded him a 6" 28-2 and $50 for the 4" 28-2... and then I ran by the Dairy Queen and got a large malt and headed home. Got home just in time to drop everything in the den and get to the church for the Valentines Banquet. I walked in the house a little after 9 p.m. I never had time to even stop and read the above responses and sincerely apologize. I was on a tight string time wise. Tomorrow I will take pictures of the 4" 28 and as soon as my wife gets home from work, I'll get the pictures up at the photo hosting site. Suffice it to say that for the present I am very pleased with this revolver. It's serial number is N549,XXX. It has the small service type stocks which are a nice dark walnut very well fitted to the grip. A prior owner put some sort of red paint/fingernail polish on the front ramp sight so tomorrow morning I will find my wife's fingernail polish remover and remove whatever it is on the front sight. I am very pleased with this revolver. It just feels good in my hand. It has a typical crisp S&W single-action. And the double-action is simply marvelous. It locks before the hammer breaks yet without making the pull overly heavy. And... no one has unscrewed the strain screw or anything. In fact, none of the screws show any sign of having ever been fiddled with. I've had a number of 6" 28's... and they were all fun to shoot. But I've wanted a nice 4" for a while, and it seemed every time I saw one I never had any money so I'd have to just let it go. This time I just decided to get off the fence. I kept one of the 6" 28's and traded the other off. If I had had any money to work with, I probably would have not done a trade. But, I've had a little more time to think about it and I've decided I like the way things worked out. Now I need to start looking for a nice holster as this revolver is definitely going to be going places with me... like the woods and fields! Sincerely. brucev.

Pastor i have a 4" 28-2 and you will love the way it handles and
shoots. I think you did good with the trade as well. I had to pay
595.00 for my 4" last december with no box or other goodies but
it's like new with just the faintest turn line started. I'm was a very
happy camper to get it.
Congrats again on your purchase/trade.
God be with you.

Pastor, as my Dad said to me when he shook my hand when I (barely) graduated high school "Good on 'Ya, Mate"!
You're going to love that revolver. I bought two 4" Highway Patrolmen last year, at really good prices, and have been carrying one of them quite a bit in my Lobo IWB holster. I'll bet you'll have the same experience.
God smiled on you. Smile back.

Sorry for the ramble of last evening. The reason the temperature was so low at my first service is that earlier last month someone broke into the sanctuary and stole all the copper pipe leading from the propane tank to the two heaters. We've been making due with a plug-in electric heater. Normally it's not so cold. The second service was held at the main church on this appointment. They are fine people but the building is old with equipment dating from about 1970 or so... and it's having problems.
The kind comment are appreciated. I understand that having cash money certainly allows one more flexibility when buying a revolver or anything else. It has been about 3 years since I've been to a gun show. The two of the fellows with tables, etc. remembered me as we spent quite a bit of time that day chatting about this and that. On Saturday I sold a nice German Mauser and a 686-1 and of course brought the money home to my wife. I told her about the 4" 28 and that I was probably going to try to do a trade if there was time for me to drive down and get back before the evening program. The $50 came from selling a knife I no longer needed/wanted.

Congratulations on your new to you 28! I got a 28 no dash last month. 6 incher from 1960. Shot it with thumbrest target grips on it Sunday. At 25 yards, it was clanging steel plates like crazy! Everyone should have at least 1 28! Enjoy yours! Bob

Preacher,
Your story reminds me of when I was young with four little boys! Back then I couldn't buy another gun unless I traded one or sold something. My wife finally took pity on me and bought me a 6" K-38 from a friend. $70! I've still got it. But, I always preferred longer barrels? I've never fallen in with the short barrel fad. I think it has to do with the the current concealability craze. I don't believe I'd choose an N frame for concealment anyway. Good luck with your pursuits!

Just doing a search on the price of a 28-2 and found this thread. There's a local guy here in Crossville that has a 6" 28-2 up for sale for $450 with a cheap holster and a scope mount(I'd let him keep the scope mount, don't want or need it) and I wanted to see what these things are going for.
He says it's been shot a lot, 90% blue but it's still in good condition. If it was a 4" I'd be more interested and might go $375-$400 on it BUT being a 6" I really am not all that "in love" with it so I'd probably offer $350. Is that just a crazy low ball offer or is that good enough for a local sale for something that's been shot a lot and is a 6" bbl. instead of the more liked 4" model.

I love the Highway Patrolman. I kind of prefer the longer barrel however.

So what's a realistic price on something like this? Not a "but this is a not made anymore, collector's item, no lock S&W revolver" price but a REALISTIC, "used revolver that I'm going to shoot the heck out of and keep as a tool" price?

I do much better w/accuracy w/ a longer barrel. Not sure if it is my age, eyesight, steadiness, or all of the above! Have 3, 6 inchers, and do fairly well with them. Bob

I'm grateful our Baptist church still has Sunday evening services, but my pastor agrees that they're not as common as they once were.
Best wishes Pastor Bruce. Maybe next time the thieves will leave carrying lead instead of copper...
