Default Model 17-3 Nickel 1970

Saw this today. Pretty cool. Owner let me take some pictures.

The N is stamped on the cylinder under the extractor star along
with the last 4 digits of the serial #.

Yes, it is original. The man worked at Smith and Wesson and took it out
of the vault and bought it when he was leaving the company.
Roy Jinks picked it out for him.

Another fine example of why we can say they don't make them like they used to...

Wow Allen

My grail gun! That's the revolver you wait a lifetime to find. You'll be eating Raman Noodles for a while when you pay for that one but it'll be worth it.

Beautiful. That's the complete package with the correct box and all. I just love the nickel K22's.

I notice that you have stated a '1970' manufacture. The SCSW does list that serial number range as a 1970 gun. But, on page 135, they identify a 'Variation' as a "Rare configuration: In 1975, 15 revolvers were made in 6" nickel, square butt, with target hammer and target trigger, in serial number range 1K3034 to 1K3655".
That is contrary to the date listed as manufacture. So, I wonder what is up with that.

Thanx for posting pics.

Thanks for the heads up B.D. I missed that in the book.

One of Fifteen, I guess that makes it pretty special.

Found on the bottom of page 183 in the S.C.S.W. 3rd.

Very nice Allen. I have a 14-3 #1K 23xx, an 18-3 # 1k 63xx, and a 15-3 #1K 100xx, all were made in 1970. Interesting that they used #'s right in the middle of a 5 year old range. Joe

It doesn't get any better than that. Did you know who had this gun or was it a chance meeting? Either way, very, very lucky!

My guess is between $1200. to $2600.

But,, who the heck really knows?

In that shape with the correct box-I'd say a lot closer to $2,600 than $1,200. I passed on one about 5 years ago not knowing what it was (price at the table was $450 ). I understand it now resides in Texas.

It was offered to me first, and if you can imagine my stupidity, I acted like a gentleman and stepped out of the way as the "other buyer" was quite anxious....

You'da thunk that would have earned me a bottle of Bombay Saphire or something....

Well Drew,he did give you (and quite a few others of us) a tutorial on how to post pics on this site using Photobucket. And it took you about 2 years to take advantage of it. Now,if we can just get Mr.Burg to learn how to do it! I'm not the only one that wants to see K 166 and K 188.

The revolver is for sure a lifetime gun, but as for being one of the 15 mentioned in the book, it does not appear to have a target hammer or trigger on it. So, i am doubtful it is one of those 15 guns. But, it is STILL quite a score, one most of us will only dream of!

is there a white label on the other end of the box?
If there is could you post a picture of it?

And yes, I did make the deal.
It is in my hot little hands.

I will do a photoshoot and post a new set of pictures soon.

I am anxiously awaiting more photos of that one. You did good. K-22's are a wonderment in themselves and that nickel just kicks it up a notch.

Congrats,

Geoff,

Do you see something I'm not seeing? I don't see how that trigger could be a TT. Hammer width isn't as clear.

Anyway, obviously a very nice gun.

Geoff,

Do you see something I'm not seeing? I don't see how that trigger could be a TT. Hammer width isn't as clear.

Anyway, obviously a very nice gun.

Andy
i wondered the same thing...it has standard equipment

Gents , the gun has a standard trigger and a .400 semi-target hammer.

Just because 'the book' states TT and TH that may only mean that
the ONE gun that was reported to Jim or Richard had those features.

Think of the Dayton Hanen guns and how they came in ALL kinds of
configurations.

This gun came this way from the factory.
If I have not stated it before, the gentleman I procured it from is the
original owner and worked for S&W in 1973, which is when he states
he bought the gun as an employee.
No reason for me to doubt him. He is a religous man.

Looks like there are many 17 experts here and I have a question. I just got a M17-5 6" new in the box, never fired, still wraped in CP all tools unopend. It is NIB. What is it worth? I have a 17-5 and 617 that I shoot daily in bullet trap. I am wondering if I would be able to trade this for a clean M17 8"? I have many guns but none of them are unfired, it seems there are a large number of collectors that want guns in this condition. Before I start shooting it, I thought I would get an educated opinion of the value and if anyone would like to trade a 8" shooter for it.

Might be best to start a new thread and not hijack this one.

Cajun, the ship date request is in on Collectors assn. side.

Once I find a ship date it will let me know whether it CAN be lettered.

But I am telling you, I bought it from the man who worked for S&W
back in 1973 and bought it right out of the factory when he left there.

The 'letter' is going to come from him as a statement of facts as to
when and how he bought the gun.

It did not ship to a distributor. So a factory letter would only show
that this gun invoiced to the man I bought it from.

I will have the ship date tomorrow,, then we will see.

Regards

Here is the latest info on the gun.

It shipped in July 1974 to a dealer in Roswell Georgia.

Carl , the man I bought it from remembers that at the time he had to have
a dealer transfer the guns he bought from S&W for him.

There were 7 or 8 guns he bought all in the one shipment.
