mod. 57
I just got off the phone with a gent that has a Mod. 57 for sale. It is a 4", blue, and the way he described it, in about 96%, non diamond target stocks, serial number S3159xx or S3169xx. No box or papers. He's asking $750. Deal or no Deal
Thanks for any and all help
John

$750 for a 4" S-prefix 57 ? I don't know what prices are like by you, but in my area, that would be a keeper........
My opinion, for what it's worth .......

Pretty good price in my area as well. With a S prefix, it should have Goncalo Alves Target stocks, and I believe they should have been diamond Target stocks. But, if it is in 96% condition, and a 4", I would buy it.

The stocks on the Model 57 would not have the diamond around the escutcheon and escutcheon nut as the revolver dates to mid-69. Diamond target stocks were phased out by the end of 68 or very early in 69.

Good call Doc44. When I went to look up the M57, I realized it was a 68/69 year Smith. Thanks for your expertise.

I haven't seen an "S" 57 in that condition for sale in my area for over three years. All the 57s are becoming increasingly popular in the Pac. N. W. If in that actual condition and a 4", I'd grab it in a heartbeat....
You may want to probe a bit more for the box and goodies. I frequently do with private parties and you'd be amazed what can turn up. The old saying, "ya don't ask, ya don't get" certainly holds true with firearms....
FWIW.....

I do love my 41 Magnums. 4" model 57s are harder to come by than other barrel lengths.
However that is too rich for my blood. Have you tried to negotiate yet?

mod. 57
This is the first "S" 57 I have come across here in 5 or 6 years. I picked up a "N" 57 about a mo. ago and that was the first one of those in about a year. A 57 is really hard to find in my neck of the woods.

I'm thinking that $750 is a bit high , at least around here. But , it IS an S-# with correct grips.
But to me , since a 4in 57 is the missing link in my Smith 41 family , I'd try to haggle a bit.

That's a fair price, don't care where you're from. Those who think it's too high probably won't ever have one,or already bought their's when prices were more reasonable. JMO.

"S" series Smith are bringing top prices
That is a doable price in my world.
Here is a first year production model 57.

That's well under $100 for prices around here in IL. I'd say go for it. I just picked up mine in a trade.

You're talkin' apples and oranges. A 6" doesn't command the same premium as a 4" in like condition. I sold a 6" nickel example on here last year for $650. Couldn't get one of my 4" guns for that,no way.

I agree with Fat Tom that nationally the 4" is the more sought after... However.
It tends to be more of a regional thing with the Mod 57's with various barrel lengths than any other guns. There is much new hunter interest for these guns so the demand for 6 and 8 3/8" guns is about equal to the 4" in the west.
I can't imagine anyone passing on a well priced "S" or "N" prefixed Mod 57 in today's market, especially if included with all the "goodies.". They aren't makin' um' anymore and they never did make that many in any finish compared to 29's and 27's....
Just sayin'

Here is South Florida there is little demand for 41 Magnums. They all want Glucks.
My LGS had a 8 3/8" blue 57 with no turn ring but no box and papers. I let it sit for about 4 weeks. Three weeks ago I walked out with it for my offer of $450.

mod. 57
Just got back from picking up the mod. 57. It is everything plus what I was told on the phone. Just a very faint cyl. ring and a small amount of bluing loss at the end of barrel. Looking it over, I bet there has not had a half box of ammo put thru it. Am going to invest in a camera so I can show it off.
Thanks
John
