Default Model 19-3 Box w/manual Value????

Local seller has this for sale. 4" 19-3 that is supposedly mint. Has the original box but no paperwork or tools. Wants $650.00. I thought that was kind of high since there is no paperwork or tools. Is the original manual and related papers available as well as the tools??? I saw one go for $705.00 on AA from Jack the Dog. Mint gun that came complete with everything. Really could not find anything on GB that compared. Thanks for any thoughts on current value as is.

I personally think he's 100 bucks high but that's just my 2 pennies
worth. Looks nice though.

Seems about a hundred dollars high to me....but they never get any cheaper....If I wanted it, I'd offer $500 cash, and perhaps, settle on $550. It's up to you, though.

My Blue Book online subscription says $550 for 100% and $395 for 98%. Add $9 for 4" barrel. Add $35 for white outline rear sight. 7K S/N puts it at 1975 mfg. Very nice.

I bought a nickel 19-3 today with matching SN's, matching Box but no tools for $575 OTD. I am happy with my purchase. I don't feel I got taken nor do I feel I got a great deal. I got what I thought it was worth to me to own it.

That's what it's all about. I paid $150-$200 too much for a 29-2 on GB, but I really like it. What is it worth to YOU?

I have one from the same vintage-great gun.I don't think the seller is out of line.
I'd probably offer 550,try to meet at 600,and cough up the extra 50 the seller wants if it was truly mint and I really wanted it.This negotiation process wouldn't last more than half a minute.

My opinion is $550 is top dollar. Explain that is Blue Book and see what he says.

Having said that, if it was sitting in front of me I might be tempted to go more just because that is one of the pieces I am missing from my collection.

Good luck!

As far as paying blue book. I tried that today at a show on a 28-2. The guy wanted $600. The Blue book is $475. I offered him $500 showing him the Blue Book. His response was that he could get that $500 for a beat up 28-2. He was actually kind of insulted.

If you like it and want it... go ahead and spring for it. May be a little high now but mint guns in desirable models are getting harder to find. They keep disappearing into collections. 19's with 4" barrels are tops in my opinion.

I have to agree with several of the posters. It might be 50-100 dollars more than the book, but if you want that gun get it. I've heard it said before on here, we probably spend that much at star bucks in six months.

I paid $500 for my 19-3, 4K41xxx, about a year and a half ago. It's pretty much identical to that one, with numbered box, all papers, but no tools. I'd offer $500 and go from there.

I find that the blue book is incorrect as often as not. Most sellers don't put much stock in "book value" around here.

I've grown VERY tired of sellers asking absolute TOP CONDITION, COMPLETE package prices ......on guns that have been fired, are missing original box, or are less than top condition in other ways. It's reached epidemic proportions on GunBroker.

I have no issues if what I feel it's worth and the asking price is $25 or even at times $50 more than I'd like to pay. A day in town with gas, lunch, maybe a visit to Starbucks and a decent cigar costs fifty bucks.

But I draw the line at a HUNDRED dollars for some reason.

I'd offer $550 and go no higher than $575.

Now I'm torn between a Model 48-3 for $825.00 and this 19-3. The 48 is boxed and papered in 98% condition in a 8-3/8" barrel. If you had to choose, which would you go for first???

I happen to think that the 4” Model 19 is the best revolver ever made. But that’s just me.

The gun you are describing, mint with box, in CA. would be probably $800. A used Model 19 with holster wear is $650 here. A “like new” would be $700-$750.

Good luck.

Last year I purchased a 19-3, 4" w/box, but no paperwork, shipped to my FFL for $375.
The seller had a couple of not the greatest pictures posted on GB.
I called and spoke to the seller and his description of the gun was average but not hyped . I was looking for a shooter/truck gun, and did not expect what showed up !
TT, TH, Factory Target stocks, and the pistol didnt look as if it had been fired, No turn rings , no cuts, no scratches. Clean as if new. And one of the crispest triggers I have ever felt. Just an almost perfect find.
There are some deals to be had still . Keep looking......

That's an easy question, even if both were priced at 650..Go for the 19.I've only sold one Smith revolver, and it was a 48.No regrets-it's 22s,next stop,357s(for their 38 capability, for me). Nonsense, all this stuff about book value(frankly,I think the book,is only a basis that dealers use to buy guns in,offering a percentage of it). It's what the gun is worth to you,no one else.I'd laugh if someone pulled a book out on me,and wanted me to adhere to that price. It's my stuff-I price it the way I want-the person buys or not.

Well I offered the seller $575.00. And he said " Thanks for looking". So I will pass on this one. Still needs cleaning and tool kit with other papers to complete as it came from the factory.

FWIW,I sold two LNIB here last year. One nickel, one blue. $550 for the blue,$525 for the nickel (only because the buyer bought it and another gun as a package deal).

This thread seems as good a place as any to raise a question I have. I have a NIB model 27-2 8 3/8" barrel that I'm trying to value. Looking at GB completed auctions, I come up with around $900 shipped as an asking price. Right now S&W sells a brand new .357 magnum for $809 MSRP. That's with a 6" barrel. Add Minnesota sales tax to that $809 and you come up with $866. Gander Mountain charges $75 to pack, insure, and ship my 27-2. That means the collector value of my 27-2 is less than zero. Maybe I'm missing something, but now I'm inclined to keep my 27-2. It's really beautiful, and I'm having serious second thoughts about selling.

Default 27-2 flawed logic

SteveJ
I think you are missing a very important piece of your logic. The 27-2 was purchased when..?? Maybe mid '70s new for around $250-$300. If you bougt it then and sell it now for $900 you have made 200% profit. If you bought it 10 years ago for say $500 you are still making $400 on the deal. Why is that a bad deal? If you just bought it recently and want to sell it you will probably lose $. That happens with almost anything you buy that has value. The going price for a new gun has absolutely nothing to do with the price of a used collectable. For the record I'll take the 27-2 any day over a new IL gun. But that's personal preference. Some would take the new one.

The only price that matters is what the buyer and seller agree upon for the item being offered, all else means squat.

I actually went back and offered the $650.00 that the seller wanted. It seemed to be a very clean gun. His response was "No thanks". That same gun is now listed for $725.00. I guess he got insulted from the offer for $575.00. Go figure........

Be patient Mitch, another will come your way.

Doesn't sound like the kind of person I'd want to buy from. List it at $650, get an offer for $75 less and turn down the offer. Then when the prospective buyer agrees to $650, turn that down and mark it up to $725. I'd be hoping he'd contact me, agreeing to the $650, just so I could say "No thanks". Well, maybe not those exact words! Keep looking mitchsnap. 19's aren't that hard to find. You might try a WTB ad here on the forum.

Ironically this seller bought a LNIB Winchester 9422M .22 magnum from me. I asked $750.00 for the rifle. Had everything. Hang tag, sales brochure, etc. However the box was not numbered to the gun. This guy drove to meet me. Took one look at it and said "Sold". Now I turn around and make an offer to him for the 19-3 and he blows me off. What is with people these days. Do they think what they are selling is "gold" and if you offer anything less........... they have an attitude.
I'm not desperate here... It's a hobby or a pastime for others. Enjoy your collections. But don't beat people up because they won't pay what you want. Plus punish others and raise the price.

Default Separation Anxiety

Man there are all kinds weirdos in this world and you just happened to run into one. You did nothing wrong and everything right. He apparently is having separation anxiety BTW he will be waiting a long time for that $725. Just try to shrug it off. You will find a better gun at a better price. Good Luck.
