Default M27 lock-up and timing check

While checking the lock-up and timing of my 27-2, if I am doing this right in SA, I do not here the second click before the hammer is all the way back on a couple of chambers. Don't know if I am doing it slow enough or if there might be a problem. The cylinder stop locks up on each chamber with no play for each one. Advise is much appreciated.

Just read the ridiculous shenanigans you are going through TRYING to make the gun malfunction. How about you just use it as it was designed to be used and not worry about cocking the hammer slowly and counting clicks and sticking your tongue out and howling at the moon etc, etc, etc.

I have never seen a 27 that had any sort of timing issue. Unless you detect some obvious problem occurring when the gun is being used in the normal fashion I'd forget about it.

Thanks. That's what I was doing last night, howling at the moon. You are right, I should not be that concerned because it shoots fine. Still learning.

Are you checking for doesn't carry up or DCU? Consult the FAQ for how to check for this and repair. With the revolver unloaded, slowly cock to the single action and then gently move the cylinder side to side to see if there is a click of the cylinder stop sliding into place. If you hear the click you may have DCU and it should be repaired according to the S&W armorer's school instructors. A thorough cleaning of the revolver (including the slots for the cylinder stop) should be performed before testing and any attempt at repair.

I bought a SW model 19-4 (?) on this forum. There are 3 chambers out of time. It is very slight but they are out of time. I tested it like you did and non of my other revolvers are out. I am waiting for a SW days at the local range/gun store so I can beat the shipping cost. I have been shooting it because I dont think I am shaving lead and when I pull the hammer back at regular speed it is locked up and timed properly. The gun is one of my favorites. I will eventually get it repaird but as long as I dont shave lead I will play around with it. My range has SW days around march. Not to far away. Good luck.

All postings here are in order. But the man does have a concern. I would like to try and address them as I see it and hope I do not offend anyone in the process.

Yes I do think you are a little anal about the second click. But as has been said if you can here the second click AFTER the hammer is cocked by moving the cylinder with your fingers that is a problem. BUT

That problem may not be a timing issue. As has been said use a stiff nylon brush clean out the cylinder notches. If that doesn't help, then remove the side plate and remove the hammer and trigger assemblies and other internal parts. Use the stiff nylon brush clean out the slot the hand goes in. Clean the hand and internal parts and lube and reassemble. Cleaning that slot has fixed more "timing issues" and tightened the lockup as removing the dirt in the slot allows the hand to be closer to the ratchet notches and makes for a tighter gun. IF

That doesn't fix your timing issue then a qualified gunsmith should look at it.

That is my take,

John

Thanks all, for the great information. It functions fine. Locks up on all cylinders. I will just shoot and enjoy. Again, Thanks. Here are a couple of pics. Need to work on adjusting the flash for indoor pics.

I have a small collection of Pre Model 27's , all are near Mint and only one has been fired very much at all .

I never considered any of them having timing or lock up issues until I joined various forums .
My FFL dealer told me on the last one I bought , that it had " the smoothest trigger" he had ever pulled .....and I'm thinking he pulled alot of triggers .

So it got me to thinking , even though 4 of the Pre 27's are safe queens , I would still like to know they are in ultimate mechanical condition .

So I am studying how to expertly test them ........ nothing wrong with that -Knowledge is power .

Oh , and may I say the S&W .357 magnum revolvers made between 1946 and 1967 are the very finest handguns ever made ? Yes......., yes I can , and thank you !

Keep in mind that Smith&Wesson revolver timing depends on the WIDTH of the hand. Hands are available in various widths to adjust lock up. If the bolt ( cylinder stop) does not engage a locking notch, the cylinder is not locked properly. Of course, I am a gunsmith, so I tend to be a little picky. Bill
