Default What's Your Favorite N-Frame?

Here's a picture of mine, although my camera doesn't take very good close-ups. It's a Lew Horton Model 24-3 that my brother bought new around 1979 or 1980 that had rust damage so I had a gunsmith bob the hammer, ream out the cylinders to 44 mag, and weld up the topstrap and cut an M&P fixed sight groove in it, cut down the front sight and pin in one that was regulated to shoot my favorite reload (200 gr. Hrn XTP @ 1000 fps out of the short barrel) to point of aim.

The gunsmith also did a really slick trigger job on it and it's like BUTTER. I then had it cerakoted semi-gloss black. I think this is the smallest, lightest, and most compact all-steel N-frame in existence, and believe me, you don't want one any lighter if you shoot 44 mag ammo in it. All I've ever tried was 210 grain silvertips and Remington and PMC Mid-range 240 grain lead.

Most gunsmiths would not have done the re-chamber job because of liability issues but this man was a good friend who knew I wouldnt sue him if I blew my own damn hand off with an unsafe load. It's an old-school thing, not everyone would understand.

Talking

It's a tough call for me because for shooting fun I love my 25-2 with moon clips and it's rock and roll time but for sheer shooting enjoyment but in the end it's any barrel length Model 27-2for sheer perfection.

Love the Model 27-2's

For shooting fun it's this

Nframes,, hello and welcome to the forum.

If indeed your model 24 was rust damaged I can see where the process
you followed took you.
The 44 magnum cartridge is much easier to load down than the 44 special is to load UP.

Do you have others??

Anyway, as to your question about a favorite N frame.
Although Smith revolvers are inanimate objects it's difficult to choose
a favorite as a parent would choose a favorite child.

The primary focus of my collecting is on N frames and big calibers at that.

Of all I have right now my favorite would be the scarcest and single most
valuable. A model 26-1. The Georgia State patrol overrun in 45 Colt ctg.
If I could only have one to carry and shoot this is the one I would choose.
Even though this one is new and unfired because of value as such.

I have many others in 45 Colt that I do shoot and enjoy.

Good luck and stick around.

Allen Frame

My favorite is my 625-6 .45 Colt Mountain Gun. I love all my guns, but I simply couldn't do without this one. It is VERY versatile. Loafers to real animal stoppers, this handgun can do it. The caliber can be very comfortable to shoot or as nasty as you can be to yourself. The gun will keep on keeping on. I do have a recently acquired model 48 6" with a .22L.R. cylinder in it that is cosmetically challenged and HOLY you know what accurate. I am absolutely stunned at the accuracy of this old beater! Gonna post pics of it in it's own thread soon. I got it on the cheap and thought there might be a reason for it. Not that I've found so far, in a few hundred rounds of ammo at the range.

I only have two, but I still can't decide..........it depends on what day it is, the phase of the moon, and what I had for breakfast. All I know for sure is that I need a few more.

24-3 and 625-3

Default have an old ad around here ...............

somewhere that shows 3 Smith revolvers and says something like Tops in Heavy Service Revolvers, and it shows an image of a Heavy Duty, A 1950 Military .44 Special, and a .45 1950 Army.

Over the years managed to find examples of each, all 3 rank near the top but would have to give the edge to the .44 Special because it is backed up by great Law Enforcement use history,& fine leather.

My favorite N frame is the M28-2. Nothing fancy, nothing wasted, just a good firearm.

Guess I'll have to stick with the old stand-by, Model 29,
6-1/2 inch, blue. If I could only have one n-frame, this
would probably be it.

My favorite N-frame hasn't even arrived yet...it's a 3" 29-3 Horton. Should be here by the end of the week. Can't wait to take her on a date to the range...the Combats will be replaced with grips that have a little more cushion.

Thanks for the welcome. I have 2 other N frames, a model 58 and a 6" Hwy Patrolman. Next I'd like to get a nickled M57 with either a six or 8 3/8ths barrel, and then I need another model 29 to replace one that I had to sell during hard times. And I'd like to find a nice Model 25 45 colt as well, probably a 4 inch.

That 26-1 of yours is an incredible gun and 45 colt is an incredible cartridge and you are awash in riches with all those other M25's. Other poeple have posted some real beauties here as well. AMAZING pictures!

One thing about loading 44 mag down as opposed to loading 44 special up, there's really not much difference with 240 grain bullets and lighter. Using Unique powder there's almost exactly one full grain differnce between the long case and the short one.

in other words, if your load for the 44 mag with a 215 grain cast gas check bullet is 10 grains unique and it chronagraphs at 1000 fps, 9 grains of unique in the special case will also obtain the same velocity with the same bullet, because by decreasing case capacity, you increase pressure.

Using other powders might not give you that exact one grain difference but I found after trying a couple other powders that Unique was most accurate with the loads I was working up so I don't remember what those other powders did.

Another bullet I use is the 200 grain Hornady XTP and that's what I use for my carry ammo, and I'm fortunate enough to live in a shall-issue free state that issues carry permits to law-abiding citizens.

Now that you bring it up, these two 57's are my favorite as well.

Great looking gun you have there too. I like those steer heads.

These are my 5 N frames 27-2 3.5" 27-2 5" 29-2 4" 29-2 6.5"and 625-3 3". The 27 5" I carried on patrol in the late 70's and 80's in a sarfiland highride holster. 29-2 4" nickle has a story to it. Back in 1973 I was at a friend's gunshop when a sales rep came into the store with this 29 he wanted the gunshop owner to buy it to sell in the store. My friend said to the rep no one around here would buy a 29 with 4" barrel. Long story short, I told my friend I would buy it and so he sold it to me for $230.00.

I only have two N frames both are model 27 -2's a 6"and a 5". I don't shoot the 6" very often as it was a gift from my wife, a non gun person, it would be my favorite.

the "N" frame is my favorite, and I've never met one I didn't like, but my #1 is the marvelous 629-no dash 8 3/8's.

I like all my N-frames. But while I appreciate the post-1950 specimens, my heart is with the old ones like these two .44 Triple Lock target revolvers...

Default Top 5

These are the top 5, I can't pick just one. The 4 inch 29 has a case, but I don't have a decent photo of it in the case.

Thumbs up

I like a 5 inch Mod 27 or a 4 inch 629, but I carry this 28-2 quite a bit so it must be my favorite.

Well first is M-27,M-625-45 colt,2nd Model 44 special,M-57. I have to say the .357 for the recoil in the n frame. I do like the .45 colt and .44 special neck and neck. .41 mag is right there as well but third all are great to shoot.

Thanks RB

Tough one -
For alround function, tho definitely not the nicest (blued guns are just prettier), I'd have to say this one.
624nd 3" LHS.

I wish Tom Turner and WC145 would pop in with pics of their chopped Jovino N frames. Or anyone else for that matter.

Great thread and excellent photos. I really enjoy shooting my .44 specials

and you can't beat a nice .45 Colt

but for pure beauty and excellent balance the 3.5" model 27-2 takes the cake! Bob

My absolute favorite is the one I don't (and probably never will) own, a Registered Magnum in a 6"+ barrel.

Second place is about an equal tie between my 6" M27-2:

..or my 6.5" M24-3:
