Mod 58 4” Nickel Questions
I have a 58, serial #54449, and I have not been able to identify the year is was made. I’m assuming with its low number, it was between 1966 - 68. I plan to offer this for sale, and finalizing my research.

What is the prefix before the serial number It would be a S or an N.
The grips are no doubt not original

N54449 would date your Model 58 to late 72 or early 73. The early Model 58s (1964) have serial numbers in the S256000 range. S&W changed to N prefix numbers in 1970. Your Model 58 is a very nice example. The target stocks on your Model 58 date from 1969 to 1974 so they are period correct, even if not original to your revolver.

There is NO “N” prefix on the SN. There is however, a marking “G12” placed under the SN.

Where on the pistol are you looking at the serial number?

Oops, forgot to take off the grip. I found a N followed by the SN. There is not one on the cylinder. Thanks for the reply.

The number you posted earlier is an assembly number. A number stamped on fitted parts to keep them together.
