Score !!! ........Another Model 10
Lost my resolve and wandered into the local gun show today. Walked out with a pretty nice Model 10-5 snubbie (2").....square butt, pinned barrel......serial # D3786xx. Mechanically, in fine condition (passes all tests perfectly). Mechanical feel is excellent ! Cosmetically, a little less fine - but still pretty nice. VERY light surface rust in several places (no pitting though) ....but that should buff out easily. Good bluing, only light scratches, no holster wear. This thing sat in somebody's nightstand for years, neglected but not used.
Original set of Magnas on it, numbered to the gun.....in need of a refinish, but complete and sound. Very good bore, evidently shot very little. No box or papers - but I don't care. As with all my guns, I bought it to shoot and enjoy, not collect.
$275.......I may have overpaid a little.....I don't know. I am happy with it, though, so it doesn't concern me.
The bonus is a set of Goncalo Alves Target stocks I found at another table, $25. Very good condition. Nevertheless, I don't like the varnishy finish on them (obviously original, but scratched some)......so these wll be stripped and oil-finished, like the Magnas.
I have never been a fan of the square butt, but I decided to give it a go anyway. The gun just looks RIGHT......and handles very nicely. It will compliment my 10-8, 3" HB nicely. Just different enough to be interesting.
Anyway I am a happy guy today. Pics below - sorry for the bad quality (not a good camera).

I don't think you overpaid for either item.
I'd say you had a pretty good day.

You absolutely didn't pay too much. That's a fine gun for that price. It would may a fine carry piece.
Best, Rick

I've always been a fan of the snubby 10's. Both mine are RB's but I'll buy an SB if I find a good one. Owned one years ago and it was great with just grip adaptor added.

Thanks for the good words, guys. I appreciate it.
I spent the last couple of hours cleaning up the 10-5.....and it's as nice as my initial impression indicated. This thing, I think, has barely been fired. The mechanical operation is CRISP. The bore is basically PRISTINE. The interior bits were NOT dirty at all, reinforcing my conclusion that it has been fired very little. Virtually all of the light surface rust came off with a mild buffing with oil and steel wool. Only one negative - on the side of the cylinder, in one of the flutes, I did find a small area, perhaps 1/8" sq. at most, that had active rust - and a tiny amount of pitting. Not deep enough to be a structural issue, I'm glad to say. So, I'll get some more Oxpho-Blue and do some touch-up.
I even had (another) bit of good luck with the grip (stocks). I REALLY don't like the shiny finish on the target stocks, so a refinish is a must, before shooting the gun. I had a set of Pachmayr Grippers on hand, which I got for my 10-8, originally. I didn't like the Gripper model as much as the Compac model, so the Gripper went into the spares box. My 10-8 is a round butt and the fit of the Gripper was not quite acceptable. I tried it on the 10-5, just for fun......and it fits ! It fits because, as I now discover (upon closer examination) - it is actually a SQUARE butt grip ! So, I don't even have to spend $$ on a temporary grip, while refinishing the Target stocks.
Using the Magnas is a no-go for me. I have never been able to stand them, even though the ones on this gun are pretty chunky. I don't like the T-grip adapter look, either. But, the Magnas are numbered to match the 10-5, so I'll keep them. I'll just refinish them, along with the Target stocks.
Anyway, sorry about the long post. I hope it doesn't sound as if I'm gloating - NO such intention. I just can't believe my luck.
Thanks for listening.

k framer, I am with you, as I just don't like the feel, or the results that I get w/magnas. Tried BK's too, and did not help. Have targets for k's and n's, much better! Want to try combats, but don't want to pay top dollar, and not like them too! Enjoy your 10-5! Bob

K-Framer, good deal and good price. We all understand a lengthy excited post about a good deal.
Everyone is different about grips, it's kind of like shoes. You may wear the same size as another, but that doesn't mean the same shoe will fit right. Whatever works for you is what's best. The standard square butt K-Frame has always fit my hand, but that's my hand, no anyone elses. As much as I love the look of the targets, they've always been just a bit too big for my hand.
I love the Model 10. The first centerfire handgun I ever fired was my uncle's Model 10 snubbie (round butt), and I've loved the Model 10 ever since, and now find that the K-Frame is really my favorite sized S&W. You just cannot go wrong with the K-Frame, maybe the most versatile of the .38/.357/9mm caliber revolvers that S&W ever made.
