Default J frame cylinder stop problem

I have an early 60s flat latch J frame, 33-1 that is very tight, and does not appear to have been fired much. I noticed that the cylinder stop mechanism at the bottom of the frame window seems to ride a little low, and sure enough, if I jiggle the cyl around a little, I am able to get it to jump out of the ramped side of the slot and rotate to the next chamber.

I tried to pull it up with my fingernails to see if it was just resting on some grease or dirt, but it just seems to sit lower in the slot than my other revolvers.

As I type this, I'm wondering if someone stoned the edges a little, in order to avoid a turn line, and went too far. The edges do look a little more rounded than my other SW's. Any thoughts on the cause, and the fix?

Default cylinder stop

I had the same problem with a 624 when it was new , I removed the stop and there was a small burr on it, I just polished it off and never had another problem.
if the stop is coming up when you jiggle it maybe the spring needs replacing or it has a burr on the side or the frame has a burr. . it will have to be taken apart to determine this. if you cannot do this take to someone who knows how.
I would o it if you were here where I live.
or replace the stop.

Why grope in the dark? You indicate a previous owner may have 'monkeyed' with it. By all means, take it to a competent gunsmith. Let the 'smith tell you the reason for the problem and have it corrected properly. There is enough indecision already.

I think I would open the cylinder, hold down the stop and squirt a little lubricant down there and then work the stop up and down to see if that fixes it. Just as a first step.

Hi, OP here. Hey, finally some replies, after almost 2 years, haha. Yes, I agree, take it to a gunsmith .... which is exactly what I did, way back when. He's a local guy who knows and collects Smiths. He said that my gun had had an action job done to it somewhere along the line, and a good one ... and that was the cause of the oddities I mentioned above, and not to worry. It really is some of the best feeling action that I've felt.

If you're having an issue, I'd suggest having a pro take a look.
